i've now become rather obsessed with Monster, the R.E.M. album nobody loves because it's loud, obnoxious, experimental, and gay, and particularly with "Crush With Eyeliner," which may be my favorite example of them in glam mode. as a result i've been watching Road Movie, which documents when they toured Monster and recorded large chunks of New Adventures In Hi-Fi. you've got to admire their balls in going out and pummelling the crowd with a solid fifty minutes of new material excepting two old songs--including three unrecorded tracks and one which had only been released as a fan-club single b-side--before grudgingly giving them a little of what they'd come for. that was when they scared off the enormous pop audience they'd won with Out of Time and Automatic For The People and pretty much sank themselves as a commercial act...those people weren't ready for serrated tremolo, synths whooping like air-raid sirens, and Michael howling about seconal, Astroglide, and getting drunk and singing along with Queen. fuck 'em.

Monster is the only REM album I really like.

Hopefully gonna pick up the new HoF soon... everything I've heard about it has been really positive, but I refuse to listen to it until I have it in my hands.

I'm being thoroughly brain-fucked by Of Montreal's Paralytic Stalks. I'm currently balls-deep in Exorcismic Breeding Knife. It's so spacey, so crazy, yet so perfect. This album manages to feel like two totally different things are going on at once throughout the whole thing and you can't quite pinpoint what you're supposed to be experiencing. It's fucking sick.
