Super Fuzz variations?

Post by WeHuntKings »

I have been interested in trying a super fuzz style pedal out for the grindy wall of razor blade riffage that it can bring. Would also love to be able to cop that early Jesus & Mary Chain fuzz sound.

What do you guys like to use?

U kno that the jesus and mary chain didnt use the superfuzz right?

It was the shin-ei "companion" fy2 fuzz that they used

At any rate the Wilson FY6 or the Creepy Fingers Harakiri are nice true superfuzz clones, i personally use a custom build one from Brian at SS/BS/DFAS cause i had a few special features i wanted

I think William Reid used a Shin-ei Companion WF8 fuzz wah -- which *is* a Tr8 Super-Fuzz, not a FY-2. Although I think they used one of those too....
Used to be able to pick those things up for 20 quid at the Barras in Glasgow.

if that's what you want, keep your eyes on ebay for Fuzz-wahs branded Companion, Alex, Apollo, Crestwood, Kent, Pax, Sekova, Tempo, Zenta, Marlboro, Altai, Avora, Boomer, Crestwood, Crown, Jax, Kimbara, Maya, National, and Tele-Star. If it's got a 6 in its name and the knobs on the front, it's s FY2/Tr6; an 8 and the knobs on the side, it's a FY-6/Tr8 Super-Fuzz.
I got a National for $18 a couple of years ago.

Actually that Hairikiri fuzz is pretty much exactly what I want in a super fuzz. Love that mids knob...

Thanks for the info guys! I want to introduce some Fu Manchu/Electric Wizard to my heavy guitar stylings and I know they use some variations on this circuit.

If you're buying one on a budget, the malekko fuzz is pretty decent and has a tiny footprint. Good place to start testing out super fuzzes.

the Wattson Superfuzz is cool, too. It's a little darker than the Harakiri, but that makes it sound radder with Fender amps, imo. If you're playing through a Marshall or Orange or whatnot, though - Harakiri rules.
Maybe partying will help.

There's also always the Boss FZ-2 if you can find one cheap, that's what Electric Wizard used I do believe :thumb:

For my Superfuzz-ish tones I just use a Fuzzhugger Upper with my Eau Claire Thunder boosted by a Sparkle Motion. All the grind of a SF with more mids

Actually, hilariously enough that Behringer super fuzz kicks some serious ass. And you can buy them for like 20 bucks! Might have to test that one out before I make any larger purchases as i can't afford too much right now since my roommate ran out on me.

Too broke to buy it otherwise I would. If I could trade for one that'd be sweet.

A bit of Super Fuzz discussion in this thread a ways back... several SF variants mentioned in first post:

I'd check the Malekko Omicron Fuzz. Here's a great demo by Tone Factor:

I think it's a pretty versatile pedal... cool internal knob fuckery.
