I don't know much about the difference between open back vs. Closed back tones, but my guess is that they left the back open to balance out the additional low end response of the 15"?

Also, yeah, totally reminded me of the old silvertones.

The benifits to splitting the power and pre amp sections is it helps the balance of the combo. It will be a nicer carry and harder to tip over accidentally.

Excelsior cranked sounds like it fucking rips! Reminds me of the arc flash. A shop near me looks to be getting these at a pretty legit price so I'll probably go check them out some time.

I totally dig the cranked sound, although I'm beginning to wonder if its got the headroom I'm looking for. Cant wait to try one out!

this always seemed strange to me but you read it all the time.

"I love the cranked sound, and it's awesome that I don't have to turn up as much, but I need headroom and a bigger amp is too loud."
These are total opposites, either you need an amp that sounds good cranked at reasonable volume or you need a big amp that'll stay clean, no?

Seems like the little box + large speaker = tubes shaking like crazy. I had a much more solid amp with a 15" speaker, and after 3 or 4 months, the tubes would get microphonic.
