The Drumming in the Grateful Dead always annoyed me. Listening to live stuff,....two drummers,...just never seemed to do it for me.

I do like John Fishman of Phish,...also Kris Meyers and Andy Farag (he's the percussionist) from Umphrey's McGee is a beastly duo.

i prefer Bill during the period when the Dead only had one drummer, or the Dead in the early period when the dual drummers were more dynamic...the post-76 double drumming was too rigid and lost the jazzier aspects almost entirely, which was a large part of what made them interesting. listen to him in 1972 when he was by himself.

Jimmy Nolen, a better timekeeper than any drummer. Same goes for D. Boon and whoever the fuck played guitar for Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou.

ha, you know the Orchestre Poly-Rythmo stuff? I have mentioned "whoever that guy is" in my favorite guitarists lists before.
I found his name (I think) on the analogafrica page, but yeah...I've been ripping him off HARD the past few years.
And yeah, Jimmy Nolem's CHANK was so deep in the pocket it was unreal.

funny thing about the names of African players - I know the names of several dudes who were in Africa 70
because I checked out their solo records or what not, and I know dudes who've popped up on comps,
but there are so many great bands out there that I have no clue about the personnel.
I will just never remember these names that I have no frame of reference for...
Maybe partying will help.

Yeah, I know Orchestre Poly-Rythmo.

I love all that African stuff. I really like all the Afro-Cuban stuff, the Afrobeat, EthioJazz, Ethiopian soul, South African jazz, all the multiple guitar polyrhythmic stuff, Moroccan Gnawa, Mailian griots, Senegalese and Ghanaian drumming, highlife, soukous, juju, and so on. There's so much music to like. So many good African music comps.

I don't really know the names of any of the guitarists in those big African bands. A lot of them are very good and they're playing on horrible equipment.

Story goes that Jimmy Nolen developed that in the pocket style when he had his own band and had a hard time finding reliable drummers.

If i'm not mistaken you are refering to Zach Hill. If I am correct I can guarantee you that he is not on the new Volta album nor was he ever intended to be, considering when you posted this you probably know by now that Deantoni Parks is there drummer and please forgive me if that is who you were talking about in the first place.
