weird idea

Post by Fuzzy Fred »

does anyone make an overdrive/fuzz pedal with an expression pedal hooked up for the gain knob. I mean, if someone made like a smaller footprint expression pedal, I think it would be really cool for pedals like the fuck that have a big range of tones.

idk, i'm really bored in class and i thought of this awesome idea. not sure if its feasible, or if its been done, but if someone makes one now, i expect a pedal

I have considered doing it but I came to the conclusion that it was not really a "great" thing to have... I mean yeah.. I love exp. pedals for filters, delay time, lfo speed, sweep range etc. But with dirt it's just not that big of a deal imo... You just set your gain at a setting you like and kick on your pedal... I never really thought it would be cool to sweep my gain with a exp pedal as I play.. :idk:

Not a builder, but I'm sure it's possible. The gain knob on the pedal is just a potentiometer(turns to control resistance), if you put that on some kind of rocking spindle outside of the enclosure, there you go!

I'm just not sure how practical that would be. Tone might be cooler actually

It could actually be a very simple mod I'd imagine. Just reroute the wires where they would go to the gain knob and instead have them go to a cable insert that you've installed.

Well I don't mean sweep the gain as you play (although you could to be really annoying  ) but I think it would be cool to be able to easily increase gain like mid song, you know? I just thought it was a cool/weird idea

Isn't there some kind of expression pedal that you can connect directly to any pot if you take the knob off and it will actually turn it?
I swore I've seen a picture of that thing, but have no idea what it's called.

It's not that easy because it's all about the value of the pot. If your dirt circuit uses a 10k pot to control your gain and you just add a jack for an exp. pedal to the lugs of the pot it won't work because your exp. pedal has a 50k or 22k or 100k pot. You would have to mod your exp pedal too.

It would be easily doable with a digital circuitry, tho (the dirt circuit remains all analog- just the exp controller is digital). You take a PIC µC for example and use the "gain" pot on your pedal as a voltage divider between V+ and GND and feed it to an analog input on your processor. Then you take a digital pot as your actual gain pot of your dirt circuit and control it via the processor. If you now connect an exp pedal the resistance of it doesn't really matter because a voltage divider is a voltage divider. M'kay? :idk:
