An offset project - please help

Post by DarkAxel »

hi guys... so i might have just scored this for like 25$ (keep your fingers crossed for me)

anyway we (my roommates and I) have been thinking about finishing the project... a party of scholars like ILF could help me (us)

1) if i was to make it into a telemaster, how should i deal with the fact that i cannot mount my strings anywhere? A tele bridge doesn't have a sustain block for mounting the strings... and i'd need a classic tele bridge for covering up the top hole for tremolo

2) if i was to make it into some kind of hybrid - would a strat tremolo look terrible on it? i can't actually decide :idk:

3) then there's the thing about a number of pickups...

4) ... and some kind of electronics

so... can you help me a bit? does it have a future? I'd like to finish it eventually without making it into a total abomination... what would ILF do?

Not a bad price! That's a jagmaster?

1. Throw a bigsby on it.

2. Throw a bigsby on it.

3. Pickguard can cover the holes.

4. Pickups and shit? :idk:

yea warmoth pickguard will take care of any pickup holes you don't want. You could cover that trem hole up with a telecaster box style bridge?

don't know... dude says it's 7 years old and it seems more like some custom piece

to address your points...

1. Kinda fucking expensive

2. I was actually thinking about that, but too expensive :idk: plus i don't know where to mount the tune-o-matic

3. true...

4. holy shit!

i could carve my own pickguard, that's not a problem... the problem is that after covering that trem hole with the tele bridge, i would miss the chunk of wood underneath that usually has shafts for string-thru configuration in it - that's what i was talking about when talking about not being able to mount the strings :idk:

Squier Jagmaster will give you all the guitar parts you need, and a body with pickups to sell when you're done. Good inexpensive set of Strat pickups, a few pots and a Orange Drop cap and you're good to go.

with the price of jagmasters here in europe, it really isn't a good way to go... i can pay a bit more and just get a Mascis squier (which i could get someday if we don't figure out anything)

but an interesting idea ;)

You know, I've got two guitars up for sale that I could loot and get you everything you need but the pickguard...

1)Do you want a trem
2)Do you want telecaster pickups in it, and if so, just the standard two?
3)What problems with electronics?
Keep in mind that if you buy a body for 25 dollars, its understandable that it may look quite frankensteinish  As long as it sounds good, then its cool.

there's still the vital question - to work on it or not?

a) to work on it
b) save up for a Mascis JM

a) do you like projects? they can go on a long time. and cost more than complete guitars but look frankenweird with no resale value.
b) if Jagmasters are that much $$ (and the neck would be 24" scale), then the Mascis is ready to rawk. or boogie. etc.

A strat trem really is the best way to go, it's such a standard design that there's a good chance it'll fit, though whatever trem system you use make sure to use a calipper so that you know it fits. Same goes for w/e pickups you buy, I'm not sure whether a tele pickup would fit in there, but you could of course shave the wood down. The idea is awesome but I don't know how this could be made without it being a frankenstein :animal: :p

Haven't done any project other than swirling a shitty guitar, changing it's pickups and electronics...

but what about getting a really cheap squier strat, loot it for neck, basic pickups and a trem and starting with that? i still can't imagine an offset strat though

Seconded on the offset strat look. IF this is more for fun and not for the best guitar you can have, then the squier idea is good, but if you want it to be really good then you should look into something else...like... the guitar i'm selling!

i mean if it turns out to be at least kinda decent, i can always gradually upgrade it, right? And if it doesn't, i can sell it without losing an unpleasant amount of money...
plus i can always put on some heavy strings, downtune it and bring the world on it's knees with it

would help you out, but i'm from europe, so that's a problem....
