Depending on your taste, Stephen King's Dark Tower series is really engrossing.

Stephen Donaldson does an interesting take on the Reluctant Hero mythos with Thomas Covenant The Unbeliever.

i'm a HUGE Gibson and Stephenson and Richard K. Morgan for sci-fi/cyberpunk done right.

Richard K. Morgan's new fantasy series is an awesome anachronostic stew of violence and mayhem. he DOES put at least 2 technically pornographic super detailed sex scenes in each of his books, and in the fantasy series the protagonist is gay, so of angry boy on boy humpin's bothers you, there's some chapter ends you're gonna wanna skip over.

or just pick up anything with some combination of....

A dragon in the background, it's wings unfurled,

A dude with no shirt on, access to 21st century style personal training and body sculpting and a HUGE fucking sword,

A layday almost nekid cowering in fear or clutching Workout Dood's leg.

the more of those present, the better the book.

REALZ.

Probably finish that Sanderson book tonight. He's not quite the writer that guys like Martin are, but he is a fantastic storyteller. I'm a little over 1000 pages in after just a couple days.

Any suggestions for what to read next?

I'm debating between:

Dust of Dreams by Steven Erikson
Fortress of Ice by C. J. Cherryh
The Books of the South by Glen Cook
Shadowplay by Tad Williams
The Ancient by R. A. Salvatore
The Wyrmling Horde by David Farland
Renegade's Magic by Robin Hobb
Hinterland by James Clemens

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

I read that hmmmmmmm... maybe a year ago? Two? "The Pale King" has been sitting on my shelf since the day it came out, but I'm afraid to read it.

I may have to read everything else he's done before I bounce into that.

Killer.

Dee Eff Dubs is cool, fer sure. I've always been a little more into guys like Pynchon (as far as the horrifically titled "literary fiction" genre is concerned), but Infinite Jest is a solid book. Personally, I've always enjoyed his essays and short fiction a whole lot more than his longform stuff (My favorite of his is the Radically Condensed History of Postindustrial Life, from Brief Interviews With Hideous Men), but I've had a few friends go on the "Wallace is diety" trip after finishing Infinite Jest.

Oh, and...

I read Broom of the System first, and then some of his shorter stuff (none of the complete books, just some of the essays here or there- still haven't bought the books yet) and I was kinda scared to start IJ because I thought I would be let down.
But damn if I don't love this dude.

Any philosophy duders might find this interesting as well-

Good read on that slate article.
Pale King is sitting on top of some fuzz pedals right now, staring at me...daring to be read.

Trying to work my way through Kraken first...a bit of a disappointment considering how much I loved Perdido/Scar.
It's like he tried to write a poor man's Foucault's Pendulum.
Ok that's a bit harsh...The DaVinci Code is the poor man's FC. Kraken isn't terrible...just not on par with his other novels.
Mieville just kinda went for the Eco thing a bit too hard.
There are some that call me...morningstaru?

Someone help me decide what to read out of that list. Couldn't make up my mind this morning so I just grabbed a graphic novel, but that will be done after the bus ride home.

Here's one for you:
http://www.amazon.com/Lord-Light-Roger- ... 0060567236

It's much funnier and more surreal than the Amazon description makes it seem, I think.

Been meaning to read that. Was even holding it in my hand yesterday at the book store. What is it like? Compared to some other books.

Comparing it to other books is a little bit tricky, but I'd say I could comfortably call it the bastard child of Dune and the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy:

It's not as silly as the guide, or as ponderous as Dune, but there's a lot of wry wit going on in there and some really unique ideas/takes on the fairly standard "people-battling-for-control-of-the-universe" situation.

For example, here's the first 'graph:

His followers called him Mahasamatman and said he was a god. He preferred to drop the Maha- and the -atman, however, and called himself Sam. He never claimed to be a god. But then, he never claimed not to be a god. Circumstances being what they were, neither admission could be of any benefit.

Definitely reminiscent of Douglas Adam's writing style. I'll have to pick that up. I have a gift card to B&N anyway.
