wee tiny practice amps

Post by grindonomicon »

What do ILFers use for non-earth-shaking practice volume? I've been looking for a sweet practice volume amp - practice volume being like 'TV / don't wake the neighbors at night' volume, and I'm mostly coming up with a Blackheart Killer Ant or a Pignose 7-100. My Handsome Devil, even on the 7 watt setting, is still too loud for playing late at night. I've had enough solid state practice amps that I don't really want another unless it's got some weird features or character - like the pignose running on batteries and having a cheap weird lil' speaker in it.

The Blackheart at .25 watt will keep the Eminences from going house-shaking, and it's a cute lil' tube amp that's good with pedals. And runs 4, 8 or 16 ohm loads. All good things.

The Pignose is a pignose! Could use the [evil empire] battery mode when I buy or sell a guitar w/ CL. Can play it out in the woods with FUZZ. I live in the woods. I like fuzz. It's also good for the cheap lo-fi & blusey amp sounds. It might sound cool with the Torn's Peaker side of the Shoegazer.

Please tell me what you like or use, ILF! :poke: :!!!:

Pignose HOG is a great practice amp, the rechargeable battery lasts forever and it really sounds great and loud if you need it to be.

For the house:
I have a Bugera V5. It's an all tube combo and can be used at 5,1 or.1 watts through it's 8" speaker or any cab down to 4ohm. It also has a headphone jack.

For the woods:
Fuzzhugger Pipe Amp. Built in Fuzz FTW!

How much do the pigdog amps go for? Googlin' & seeing it on the D*A*M forum, I'm assuming it's one of those things if you have to ask about the price, you can't afford it?

Not seeing a single bad suggestion so far! I forgot the 4-5 watt amps with built in attenuators or power reduction circuits. :omg:

Exactly!

I tried running a good dirt pedal into my craptacular Korg mFx pedal's amp-cab sims, and then using the computer speakers, but it did not sound sexy.

Smokey amps, it's an amp and speaker in a cigarette box, it can power a 8 Ohm cabinet! :thumb:

Luckily I don't ever have to play this quietly, but if I did I think I would just buy a cheap Pod and be done with it.
Maybe partying will help.

ya i hear pods are pretty good for the money, good for playing through headphones and doing some recording, ive heard good demos made from it, mostly post hardcore/metal core so its not anything crazy for di but they were still good.

I wanna grab a Blackstar HT-1 when I have the Cash, Hybrid Tube Amp, 1-Watt, Combo & Head versions with or without reverb available, nice tone and simple.

it's probably not anybody's idea of great tone, but nothing else in this price bracket is, either. ultimate in portability and volume control, though.
