There is a dude on Talkbass that knows everything about Kurt's gear from every era even the last album they did that never got released.

I might be confusing the two booklets, I don't have the Death Metal FX86 pamphlet anymore. Could be they both had Napalm settings!

That's cool, I was never much of a gearhead when I was young. Painfully so, now that I realise how much I would have liked to keep a couple three pieces of gear I sold off! Kurt had my favorite bass sound in the whole 'grunge' scene back then, and I always thought that the 'distortion came from the pedal'.

I'll have to check that out on TalkBass, I'd be really interested to know what he was using for a bass + amp + cab back for the first couple LP's.

I got my Ibanez Standard Fuzz because I read Dan Auerbach used one since their first album.

The OG Death Metal was-is a wonderful chainsaw of mayhem. The ones they make now just don't sound the same.

I thought the 'one Shane Embury used' was the 'Bass Grunge' tho? I think I still have the little book that has the 'Napalm Bass' setting in it...

I also bought a Rat pedal cuz Kurt from TAD used one on bass. It was more the amp + him than the Rat pedal tho. My GK never sounded like TAD with a Rat pedal...

Original death metal is straight beast mode, I remember doing this show in a parking garage where I was using one on my board and the guitarist for this band Narrow gate was using one on his, We got completely different tones out of them. I ran mine into a Plush tube head with a 2x15 and a kustom solid state head with a univox 2x12 bass cab, it was a monster tuck and roll party.

In response to the original poster...my band mate is close friends with one of the guys from Smart People Factory -- he's actually our resident troubleshooter when we can't figure out what the fuck is wrong with a pedal/amp/whatever, aha.

On topic: I don't think I've ever bought anything explicitly BECAUSE someone famous used it, though I've discovered pedals because of famous people using them. (Though I use the term 'famous' rather lightly, and in a more relative fashion, as most bands I go to see live would not be considered famous in most circles other than the circle of music they inhabit, aha.)

I will say that a LARGE part of the reason that I bought a Trogtronic Model 666 is because of the Geronimo album. When I heard the sounds the Trogo models can make, I HAD to have one.

I got into EHX because of Nirvana and Dinosaur jr. After a while I decided I didn't like EHX after all and sold all of 'em.

Got into Parker guitars and a lot of effects because of Adrian Belew, got into touch guitars because of trey gunn. Danelectro 'cause of Nels Cline. Nasty fuzz because of NIN.

I think I haven't bought anything blindly (except those EHX pedals) because someone famous was using it, but I've tried out a lot of stuff because someone cool was using it. If I've liked it myself, then I've bought it.

I ran mine thru a GK800RB + 4x12 & 2x15 until it finally caught on fire... The amp head, not the pedal. Best band practice ever.

Another pedal; MXR Distortion + cuz of Husker Du. I lacked the cranked Fender + Roland JC amps... :picard:

I'm a big Buckland fan myself. I will one day own a thinline telecaster, and it will be due in large part to him. And that's right ILF, I listen to and enjoy Coldplay.

From what I vaguely remember from either a add or a review on the FX86 was it was the same distortion circuit as the grunge with the gain fixed at max and the three band EQ added.

The Bass Grunge version has a clean mix... The only reason I've kept it all these years. There's settings for 'melvins', 'prong' and two settings for 'exit 13' in the book.

I bought my Telecaster initially as a 17 year old who liked Jimmy Page and James Iha.

I set out on a quest years and years ago to put my own spin on J. Mascis' Fuzz wah sound on Kracked from You're Livin' All Over Me.

Really.. huh, that might have got me more interested back then... I remember A/Bing it against the ODB-3 and for some reason liked the boss better :idk:
It's funny I KNOW I bought the RAT I had because I read about some on using it on bass but I can't for the life of me remember now
