The El Cap tops out at 1.5 seconds in fixed-head mode, so that might be an issue for you as well.

I find myself using delay, generally, from between 300ms to about 750ms. What kind of stuff are you doing that 2 seconds is barely covering the bases? I'm genuinely curious, as obviously you are using some technique or playing style that is not something I'm familiar with. This might be one of those "teachable moments". :thumb:

Yeah, shoot. Sounds like you need a looper, not a delay pedal.

No surprise here, but I voted for the El Capistan. I've owned a number of delay pedals in my day, and the only one that I loved as much as my El Cap is the big box Deluxe Memory Man.

Like others have said on this board, the El Cap can do more than a tape emulation. I set mine to sound similar to a DMM.

Same! Although I would say the echolution comes close as well.

You might want to get more than one delay depending on how ambient you want to sound. Actually you'll probably end up wanting more than one delay regardless.

I like the Ghost Disaster's delay sound. There is no modulation on the repeats here, which you might want for ambient stuff. However the reverb part makes up for the lack of modulation and adds some ambient feel. Benefit of a combo pedal.

The Lunar Echo is a lot more versatile. It can do the standard delay just as well as the Ghost Disaster. But does have modulation which can go from subtle to not subtle to crazy, which is appropriately labeled as 'Wrecked' on the toggle. The best part is that is has a (momentary) take-off switch with which you can send it into self-oscillation goodness and back by releasing it.

As for the capuccino, the demos didn't do it for me, but since getting the two above there's only one delay pedal that still has my interest (Echolution). You might want to wait till Strymon releases the Timeline and people start dumping their caps for funds.

fuck the haters. save up (if you have to) like i did, and take a chance on the MG Music That's Echo Folks w/pigs tail. i will never be pleased with any thing else. I recently bought an el cap but it just doesn't have the same character. The TEF/w pig's tail is sort of like the original Aqua Puss, but better, and with the option of being crazy. You may here people say that it's just a dm-2 copy, but no. a lot of things start off as just a fuzz face or just a TS-808, but that doesn't mean they sound anything like their ancestors. just my two cents (not that it's worth anything).

El Cap sounds great and has most of the features you might want. The Deluxe Memory Man is amazing, the big box I have is better sounding than the El Cap imo, the new ones have tap tempo and cool stuff but I dunno how good they sound. If you're looking for more crazy features maybea DL4/SMMH/something else similar? would be good.

EDIT: Can't believe I forgot the timeline/timefactor. Do it.

sound-on-sound, Fripp-esque stuff. the sort of thing for which i suppose people spend $300 on a looper nowadays, but i can't afford that kind of expenditure and rather like the tape-loop-esque thing you get from having long repeats/feedback that decay/deteriorate over time as different to the relatively pristine loop + overdubs feel a typical looper gives you. the most interesting thing to me about tape-style looping has always been how the signal changes as it gets rewritten and deteriorates...i've had hours of fun making marching armies, 4-engined aircraft at treetop level, batteries of church bells, railroad trains, and other things come out of the RV-3 assisted by a Stratocaster vibrato, other boxes on the board, and that all-important signal degradation that makes five or six layers of different elements moosh together into a train or a troop after they go around in the Rinse cycle together thirty or forty times.

in my experience 625ms is barely enough delay time to do Edge-style quarter-note delays over medium tempos. if you want to do slow, floaty ambient or post-rock stuff--hell, let's be precise, if you want to do anything slower than "Where The Streets Have No Name"--that's simply not enough time. In My Opinion.

Echolution.

I'm not actually sure what the max time on it is even because I get bored waiting. According to the site, the modulation side caps out at 12 seconds, so maybe that...

The straight delay sounds better than my old DMM and the modulation sounds like angels singing. Plus it does reverse, multitap, loops, and has gain and hi-cut controls. Bonertown all around.

the Echolution is fascinating, but that's a LOT of money for a delay. well over the OP's price point, anyway.

I'd wait for this before spending any money on a new delay. Also, you may see used El Cap prices drop when everybody starts flipping 'em for Timelines. Seeing that the price difference is only $150, the Timeline is theoretically way more bang for the buck, we'll see shortly.

If you are going straight for delay the timeline totally is the best deal. Once the el cap used prices drop it will still be a viable option especially space wise. I would still vote for the flashback though, lots of wonderful sounds way cheaper than anything else we are talking about. If you want to go cheaper than ~150 used then look for a behringer echo machine which can be had super cheap and basically are a line 6 echo park clone. (I've had both and they sound exactly the same.)

I agree, the Flashback is a great option. Small footprint, multiple settings, and inexpensive. Hard to find anything that bests it in that price range.
