they make electrical charge when compressed or decompressed. striking it actually creates AC voltage. when voltage is applied it changes chape. this is how a piezo speaker moves air. the crystal is expanding and contracting (when ac voltage is applied). you can buy a piezo speaker and use it as a mic. they are the same.
