New Fuzzz day: Shin Ei clone within

And I've A/B'd it with an original!






I was quite disappointed at first, as it didn't sound much like the original, and the manual/website info was a bit vague on how the controls interact, but I started tweaking it and found that with the tone control dialled 99% of the way off it sounds pretty much spot-on. Nice and thick like a shin-ei companion should sound. But even tweaking the tone a fraction makes it start to sound fairly aenemic.

The fuzz knob works the same way as the original (though it's set in backwards). All the way left for trebly, viscious waspy fuzz, and to the right for slightly fatter fuzz. It has way more range than the original. 7 o' clock to about 11 o' clock covering the whole sweep of the original.

I haven't really tried the second, more "restrained" mode much.

Is the Shin Ei good with chords?

The original Shin Ei isn't really that great with chords. The LotRF is better at handling them when you start pushing the tone control up, but it's still not the best. Barre chords are forgiving, but open chords just sound like an acid bath of noise.

make sure you run it into either another overdrive pedal or into a dirty amp

Hmmm.. I've always wanted to try that one.. I built a clone which I really like but haven't tried a real one.. but from what you are saying 'bout how it works I have lost all interest... If the tone did the opposite of what you say [all the way up sounds like the real one and it gets thicker and bassier as you turn it] then I be like YEAH! but sadly

Yeah, it's a shame that the "original" mode on the LotRF isn't noon on the tone control. But having said that, the fuzz is pretty bassy with the tone dialled "off" though. Really thick/muffled in a good way, and then with the fuzz, which is kind of a tone control in itself you can dial it back (forward) a touch more for a slightly fatter tone.
