And I've A/B'd it with an original!

I was quite disappointed at first, as it didn't sound much like the original, and the manual/website info was a bit vague on how the controls interact, but I started tweaking it and found that with the tone control dialled 99% of the way off it sounds pretty much spot-on. Nice and thick like a shin-ei companion should sound.
But even tweaking the tone a fraction makes it start to sound fairly aenemic. The fuzz knob works the same way as the original (though it's set in backwards). All the way left for trebly, viscious waspy fuzz, and to the right for slightly fatter fuzz. It has way more range than the original. 7 o' clock to about 11 o' clock covering the whole sweep of the original.
I haven't really tried the second, more "restrained" mode much.
