IF you want to make compromises, I think You can do it by trying out different strings: reg.flatwounds, the rubber coated, the semi-flat steels perhaps - though I'd say they are half way lame from the great sounding extremes.

Also, changing /adding pickups make a lot deal, responce and sounds wise. Musicman stingray pup with flats might be an interesting option. In my opinion, it's hard to go wrong with them anyway! :animal:

I actually have a MM StingRay4 which I had flats on. Didn't suit me at the time. Then (and still now) I'm looking for more of a piano bass tone than an upright bass tone. Long sustain, lots of attack, articulate. Which I'm hoping to get both out of the fretless... the upright and the piano-esque tones. MAYBE, just maybe I'll be selling this MM soon to fund the franken-J.

Ah, so then You'd probably like a strings through body structure, brass or steel bridge, too. Neck through has a lots of pros I'm always in for, after having played a fretboard with too many dead spots, but You could find the neckthroughs a bit compressed compared to bolted or glued neck.

The piano brightness with flats can be hard to get, but my luthier told some fretless players actually put in aluminum fretmarks on the old Fender square marks just to have the brighter high end!

I need to replace my flats on my fretless, I think it sounds too dark with them on.
