The one that got away

Since you're reading this post on a gear forum, it stands to reason that you've bought and sold a lot of amps, guitars, and pedals. I know I have! I can't even count the number of pedals that I've been through. I've sold at least 3 amps. If memory serves, I've sold 4 guitars in my life.

But of everything I've sold, there's one guitar that haunts me to this day. An Ovation Preacher Deluxe 12 string- a fully solid body electric guitar built by ovation. I believe mine was a 78, though at the time I didn't have the know-how on how to confirm that. Here's a picture of a similar guitar that was not mine:



Mine wasn't black- it was a natural, dark wood grain. I'm pretty sure mine had independent volume and tone for each pickup, but my brain is sort of foggy around those details. It sounded absolutely incredible. The pickups were active, with a tone somewhere in between a single coil and a humbucker... sort of like a beefy p90 without the hum. For a 12 string, it was also a dream to play. One detail which I can't forget was that it was *extremely* headstock-heavy, which I wouldn't have imagined considering the shape of the guitar and size of the body.

I used it live a bunch, and on the recording of 2 records with my old band. I sold it years ago when I was going thru a divorce, and I desperately needed cash. If I could go back in time and convince myself to raise the money in some other way! I occasionally go looking for one to replace it. I've had pretty good luck finding Ovation Preachers... occasionally a Preacher Deluxe. But I've never found another Preacher Deluxe 12 string.

I haven't sold very much. But things I regret selling... old big box proco rat... traded for a old vox tonebender, believing it'd be my dream fuzz tone. I miss the rat... I also sold my svt3pro after I bought a svt vr... now my vr makes me most happy. But that darn svt3 was the most reliable amp. Tube preamp, mosfet poweramp. Great tone. Great price.

Thinking of sell my musicman stingray4 but fear the same. Will I miss it? But it would go to a good cause! (My custom build)

I don't think I really regret selling anything, I kind of regret passing on a big box micro synth some dude was selling on CL because it had a broken (yet functional) slider last year and I haven't had much luck finding another one....... Toronto seems to be a desolate place for that sort of thing.......

I regret selling my 90's Peavey Classic 50... that amp was so killer! It beat the crap out of my Fender amps, hands down but for some stupid reason, I decided to sell the Classic and keep the Fender.

Don't really have any that I still regret, but if I had to pick...my old bassman 2x15 I had to let go when I wasn't working, and an orig cs9. Excellent chorus, not excellently cheap anymore.

I had a classic 50 in the 90s! It was the 4x10 model. That thing was a beast! I also used one of the 2x12 models in a session after my 5150 blew up. Thru a closed back four twelve that thing had some serious thump.

that was like a decade ago and i was not playing / touring and had just moved halfway across the country and could not bear to move it again. sold it back to the store i got it from for what i paid, but you would all cry and / or throw things at me if you knew how little money that was...

The day I had enough money to buy a Fender Super Six at this music shop I was super pumped, called them and they were like "We literally JUST sold it." I was like "I literally JUST decided to blow up your store."

i loaned my friend a aria tele copy from about 74...it was awesome. he had it for about 2 months while i was doing some shows, when i came back home i went to his house to visit (not to pick up the guitar) and found out he committed suicide. i freaked out as we started playing guitar together and were at one time very very close. i didn't ask for the guitar back i thought his parents might like it around as a memory or sumthin.
i really really miss that guitar and constantly search on ebay for another. although now i want it to remember by bud by. ...but it is a great guitar.

when i was into a JP jr phase at one point i had 4 , 56 tv, 56 tobacco, 58 cherry, 59 tv.... and even though the 59 was my favorite (jt/dolls fan here), i never played it or the other double cut (single cuts are my preference). so i sold the cherry double cut and traded the tv for a 53 gretsch silver jet with a script logo...a very early model and i've never even seen a picture of another with a script logo....BUT....i missed the tv so much i couldn't enjoy the gretsch. i ended up giving the gretsch to that bearded guy in zz top. damn...i miss that tv.

there's tons more guitars that i miss (not really regret) but those stick out.

i gave away a fender super six. that amp didn't work for me.

BTW:
i have (2) classic 50 heads, (2) classic 2/15 cabs, (1) classic 4/10, and (1) classic 50 4/10 combo. i never use them and would love to kik them out the door to someone that would. great amps. i got you guys covered if ya ever need another.

My bandmate had a Squire Super-Sonic (blue sparkle), which was his primary guitar for our first two or three years as a band. He got the GAS bug bad and ended up selling the Super-Sonic after buying a Jazzmaster and building himself a custom Tele Deluxe. But that Super-Sonic had a certain something that I always dug... incredibly hot pickups, and the ridiculous sparkle finish was really appealing to me. He told me that he was selling it, and I entertained notions of buying it from him, but it was gone before I could make up my mind.

Damn, now I really want to track down a Super-Sonic for myself again. Except maybe I'd go for silver instead of blue. Hmmmmmmm...
