Tell me about jaguar reissues

Post by ifeellikeatourist »

Sorry to be so out of the loop about this, but are the new Fender Jag reissues CIJ? I saw one (used) at a music store yesterday for $450. It looked exactly like this one http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-Jaguar-HH-Electric-Guitar?sku=511323 It looked practically brand new but said "Crafted in Japan" on the neck, which made me think it must be an older one, but then I came home and saw it there on Musicians Friend, so, just wondering what was up with that? What other new Fenders are CIJ? Thoughts? Everyone seems to like them better than the MIMs. :idk:

i haven't played one of those guitars, but cij and mij fenders are just plain great. i have an mij jazzmaster from the last few years and it really is a quality instrument. excluding the pickups, which are good but not amazing or anything, i'd say it's equal to my MIA strat

Positive. It is exactly like that one at MF. It's got all of the switches and shit that the blacktop series does not have. And the sexy painted headstock. I assumed it was an older one since it said CIJ on the neck, but when I looked it up on MF, I was surprised to see that they had that exact one.

That's not a Jag. That's a Les Paul with a fender neck, that happens to have a Jag shaped body.

Get it, switch the humbuckers for hot single coils, and slap a bigsby on it.
Do you like listening to homemade music? Me too. Why don't you try one of mine?

I had a CIJ jag and it was godly. Everyone will tell you the electronics are garbage, but they seemed fine compared to my AVRI Jazzy... :idk:
Never really dug any fenders with humbuckers though...

But if you find a CIJ with a matching headstock and single coils. BUY IT.

I quite liked the one that I played. Don't know about reliability or anything though, but it felt solid. :idk:

It's as much of a Jaguar as an AVRI or vintage '60's Jaguar.

You know why?

Because the company that makes them labeled it a "Jaguar." Therefore, it is, indeed, a Jaguar. You can debate it all day and all night. The fact is that the headstock says "Fender Jaguar" - Making it a Fender Jaguar. Even if it's not the normal configuration.

The electronics are fine. I intended to gut mine when I replaced the pups, but didn't bother. The wire is a tad thin, but no thinner than wire used in every other guitar I've played.

The humbuckers in the Jag in question don't even sound like normal HB's. IMO, they sound like the Wide-Range HB reissues. Which, while not truly "wide range," they still sound significantly different than standard HB's - brighter, crisper, etc.

I have the Jaguar above. I swapped the pickguard with a standard Jag one and added jaguar single coils. I also added a bigsby.
It's the Jaguar I use in most of the demos for Noisemaker Effects. :thumb:

I understand the concern regarding this jag not having single coils, but I really like humbuckers, and don't currently have a good guitar with humbuckers, so even though they aren't the classic jag configuration, they would probably be best for my set up. I also feel like having humbuckers with coil tapping switches would give me a broader range of options and the ability to get a good single coil tone as well. I do wish it had a tremolo though...

yeah, it's time to draw a line in the sand. jaguars have single coils and a floating tremelo, anything else is a different beast.
that being said, i've played the guitar you're talking about and it's fucking quality. a friend of mine has one and it's solid as hell.

If that's the case, you'll want to swap the humbuckers regardless. They're good, but like I said in my last post, they don't really sound like your normal HB's.

Plus, IIRC, they're ridiculously low-output. Like close to strat pickups. I think they usually weigh in at around 8k for the bridge and 6k for the neck.
They're not splittable, either, so you'd need a set of HB's that are splittable. Even if they were splittable, you'd be looking at 4k and 3k split. That's far less than even lipstick pups. :idk:

As far as the lack of trem, Bigsby B5's and B50's can be had for cheap. A vibramate mounting plate is like $50. Figure for $100 and *maybe* 10 minutes (including removing the tailpiece) of work you've got a trem.
