Thanks for the insights/feedback.

I think the WYSIWYG aspect of the Tascam Model 12 is appealing. But then would I be frustrated with the diminutive screen and wonky navigation system required to use the screen?

The Zoom R-20 has a bigger screen... but seems to have fewer surface controls for commonly adjusted parameters.

Ultimately setting up the rhythm track is one of my weaknesses. Perhaps if I got better at it, or got something like EZ-Drummer, then I wouldn't be AS FRUSTRATED with using GarageBand on a computer.

But... I'm not so sure.

So the uncertainty and interlocking unanswered questions keep me from taking a plunge one way or another. I just know that the Zoom H5 and GarageBand options that I already have aren't motivating me to even make rough sketches so I don't forget the parts/pieces that I've come up with.

So something has to change.

:idk: I hate programming drums.. I would always end up going down rabbit holes making things more complicated and get more dissatisfied… if ever went down that road again I think I’d want a proper drum machine/ sequencer

i learned on my HR-16. after using that tiny interface and only being able to scroll in one direction doing drums in GB was delightfully simple.

The Beat Buddy drum machine pedals aren’t as cheesy as one might expect. Might be an option for a “here, just do it for me” approach. I don’t know if the deluxe versions do anything other than send audio to record, though.

i had some steadfast rules for myself about programming drums, the most important being “don’t write parts a human couldn’t play with four limbs.” that kept me from making my parts too complicated.

What's your workflow like? How many tracks do you expect to need? Do you expect to be doing a lot of mixing or editing on the device? Do you want it to be able to give you a master bus mixdown, without ever needing to import into a DAW? Does it need to be convenient to travel with? Or another to approach it: what do you wish the H5 could do?
