what is the texture like? could you offer comparisons?
Hmm..
a long the lines of.. masf stary wisdom, mountain taking megalith/DE supermassive Blake hole, a few of the last gasp pedals.. here.. I recorded a shitty demo
Picked up a Yamaha THR5 so we'd have something to jam with at the rental apartment during ILFEU and it's actually super impressive. Walked in thinking I'd get a katana mini x or the blackstar blackfly, but luckily they didn't have any but recommended the THR. Will be a great practice amp for my youngest kid.
i’ve been watching a slightly tired-looking Supro Black Holiday modern reissue for awhile as the donor body for the repro Bigsby pickups i plan on getting. it started IIRC at $349. then it went down to $329. when i looked today it was down to $299. they usually go for $600 and up so i figured this was the time to move. Affirm once again is my friend, and i’m pleased to note that if a store offers only card options and Apple Pay you can access PayPal and Affirm via Apple Pay. so now i’m three working projects backed up plus this new thing. fortunately (famous last words) the Jetstar is almost done and the DeArmond M-77T i’m putting Firebird pickups in doesn’t appear to need much i don’t already have. i have what i need for the Double Jet, and intend to finish the in-house stuff other than the Galaxiemaster before going at the Supro Bigsby thing. i have to measure the Supro with strings on to figure out which style of mount will work; i’m assuming i’ll need the taller ones because the Supro has a great tall rosewood-based bridge almost as huge as the one on the electric bouzouki. anyway, that’s one step closer to finishing my plans. next, when it’s budgeted, i need to order stuff for the plan to convert my Squier CVJM to a baritone while still keeping a JM. i’m going to order a loaded JM body on line, take the whole pickguard/pickups/bridge/tremolo off the current guitar and set up the new body with the Squier neck. i picked and modded that stuff carefully to get what i wanted, and don’t want to do that twice. the baritone will incorporate some wiring tricks and get CuNiFe WRHBs.

the perfect neck for my weird Telecaster project is in my Reverb Likes: mahogany, rosewood board, natural finish, angled headstock, carbon fiber reinforcement, and a wheel truss adjuster at the heel of the neck. that’ll be the next thing i order…i have to prioritize the Supro and Tele neck because they’re the only ones i can find and also afford.

Last purchases: a 1989 MIJ Boss BF2 (for a pedal this old it's in very pristine conditions!! Here pictured with a DS2 on the left... these 2 where my first 2 pedals I abused almost 20 years ago, and now after aeons I'm rocking again this combo!!!), and EAE Mirror House V2 (madness of a modulation/pitch-shifter).
Who uses something like the Tascam Model 12 to build overdubbed multitrack music without using a DAW?
This is the bee in my bonnet.
I have a Zoom H5, but it is clunky to overdub on and I don't like recording onto GarageBand because my computer is a distraction machine of all the other things I could be doing and/or have left undone. Internet access helps nothing.
So... thoughts from those using a modern stand-in for an old Tascam PortaStudio?
I used the Zoom R16 to record a couple albums, and I definitely liked building songs that way better than on a DAW. I also bought the R20 when it was on super duper sale a couple years ago, but I haven't recorded anything with it yet because my soul is a pillar of ashes at the moment. I'm prone to distraction too, and I use a computer for work most of the day, so the last thing I want to do in my free time is be on computer. I find that I listen closer to what I'm recording when I don't have a colorful screen staring back at me. Also I'm not plagued by pop-ups and alerts and all the nonsense that comes with a computer (there's probably way to change settings to make it more focused-work-friendly, but I am simply too stupid to know how). The R20 does have a little screen, but when I was testing out the workflow, I just put my notebook on top of it while tracking. The other thing to consider with the R20 is that only two of its inputs are combi jacks. That's neither good or bad, it just depends on your needs and what you'll want to be recording.
So yeah if you're an ADHD-type like me who needs as much help as you can get to lock in, I think it's helpful.
