Anybody has the chance to compare the Echopark f1 dual germanium fuzz to the Catalinbread Fuzzrite? What are your thoughts?

Because the Catalinbread is cheaper... but the Echopark is what Matt Sweeney is using for the Superwolves and I love his sound!Chankgeez wrote:![]()
Why those?![]()
(You really wanna talk to lordgalvar!)

I've been away from ILF for a while... but I'm still not on TGP. ;-)Chankgeez wrote:Gotcha!![]()
I've never played either one.![]()
Flatscan (who participated in the Basic Audio tourbox here & who posts on TGP) really likes the Echopark.
(You can search his posts for "F1" on TGP.)
Don't cheap out on a Fuzzrite though, Syl.

I'll try to take a look there! Thanks!! :-)Chankgeez wrote:Doesn't matter if you have a TGP account. I think you can still search there. Just if you're interested in someone's opinion.![]()
If you have any questions for Flatscan, I can ask him.
Thanks!!Dandolin wrote:can't help ya, Syl - I did have a Merkin which I like, but that jawn was tweaked and teez'dfwiw, I liked it
agree that lordgalvar is ya man tho![]()
if you decide to widen yer search, maybe consider one of the Basic Audio offerings - I've been consistently impressed with both his close-to-the-source and tweak'd versions

The more difference between them generally means Q1 is way higher gain which can lead it to be oversaturated on chords and stuff. But comparing the one I built (PNP positive ground) to my vintage ones and others that I have played, look for something that is like hybrid high gain Si on Q1 and lower gain Ge on Q2. The PNP or Ge style ones will generally have to battery, isolated or run like a MAX1044 power chip (because positive ground). Just my thoughts on it anyway and could be wrong.![]()
Haven't tried most of the commercial/mass-produced ones.
Basic Audio stock-ish Si Fuzzrite is really an excellent vitange one with some nice extras. Could sound like my Sanner 1990s or my Mosrite 1960s Si ones. John's other one (why am I blanking on the name?) is way way more versatile but more fuzzy and less raw. Both are excellent.
I have played lots of clones though, and they all are usually biased pretty close to the tamer settings. Less of that intermodulation distortion sound, but solid, if boring (they all run together...nothing too unique about them).
CultureJam's was pretty excellent too but more sensitive to input impedances than Basic Audio. It had the character you were looking for. Fuzz Righteous I think?
I really like the one I built though. It's got a very cutting cyberpunk I guess sound, but it gets way weak sounding with power chords sometimes (but rolling back the controls can fix that). I changed some stuff here and there, but not too much. Based it off of small bear's guide for the two different fuzz rites but deleted the tone switch.
Nu-Fuzzes can get there and might have more cut sometimes with the tone all the way to treble (it feels quieter the other way).
Iron Butterfly fuzz may be something to look at. I think Dino traced it (I've got one too).
