Rockin' the Suburbs In My Apartment
Finally having a stable place to live and artistic inclinations again, I am putting together my apartment rig. I was pondering what other people had come up with and am looking for ideas.
Current Rig: Strat, fuzz, cheap reverb, BF-2, Fender Excelsior amp
Genre: Post-Punk
My desire is a smaller, quieter amp with spring reverb coupled with a distortion/overdrive and a fuzz. The best idea I've come up with is a Fender Princeton amp but I'm curious what other apartment dwellers use.

Re: Rockin' the Suburbs In My Apartment
Living downtown, I’m a far cry from the suburbs. But my rig’s the following
Guitar: Jazzmaster
Amp: Vox VX50BA
Effects: Wolf Computer > Bass Octave > Sovtek Big Muff Reissue > Atmosphere > Tremolo > Tonal Recall
I wanted a bass amp because I’ve always preferred the sound of a guitar through a bass amp, and for some reason bass amps always have more convenient features than guitar amps. This one’s ridiculously light, tube powered, and has both headphone and direct outputs. The amp also gets loud enough to play with a drummer without being mic’d. So, for something I can play in my apartment at 2am or take with me on the subway for a jam session, it’s hard to recommend a better amp. It doesn’t have any reverb, though.

I've lived in a rural house for five years but am about to move out into a rural apartment and I am really counting on my 50w Katana. I don't give a shit about the onboard FX; I either run my miniboard through it or run the big board through it and my Ampeg Gemini II.

Gotta be tube? If not, Vox Pathfinder Reverb with the LED mod is a good home pedal platform, though the reverb is just adequate. Or an old Yamaha JX or VX combo if you like old Fender sounds.

Princetons get pretty loud in my experience - beyond apartment-appropriate.
No spring reverb built in but maybe the JC22 or JC40 + the Source Audio reverb pedal?

Appropriate signature.
The little JC22s are cool. As are the Boss Katana range.

I don't think a Princeton is going to be much quieter than the Excelsior. I don't get to use my 15w in my apartment practically ever. My first thought was the JC-22 too; that's what I'm looking at, anyway, to get away from playing with headphones.

They sound absolutely lovely for sure. But it is true that there is no reverb...

I would say reverb and playable volume are the important part. Reverb pedals just don't do it for me.

Re: Rockin' the Suburbs In My Apartment
The JC-22 has a digital verb that (IMO) sounds better than the actual spring verb on other JC's, but not quite the same thing as a Fender etc.
It's hands down the best new amp in that price range if you happen to like the Jazz Chorus toan.
Otherwise,
+1 on old Yamaha amps (i like the YTA series), they basically sound the same at any volume like a JC does but sound more like a toob amp.
Or look out for a SF Champ clone or similar. 5w is more than enough for apartment levels.

The gvt in bst is a good bet. Great reverb and a half power switch.
Those yamaha thr10s are supposed to awesome too.
Honestly apartment and amp have never really worked for me, so don't be afraid of interface and headphones as an option

Seconding the gvt. I have the 50 watt combo and I love it. Takes pedals well and has a Baxandall EQ if you're into that.starmansam wrote:The gvt in bst is a good bet. Great reverb and a half power switch.

Re: Rockin' the Suburbs In My Apartment
I am on my third journey playing bass again ( really having fun too!) and I find myself in a similar situation. Live in a really nice house but each space is max'ed out and I have really young kids / close neighbors. My only playing time comes at night after the kids / wife are all asleep.
My rig is:
Musicman SUB 4 string -Boss TU3 - Seymour Duncan Bass Compressor, Darkglass Element - headphones connected to laptop so I can jam out with songs.
My board is going to be Headphone amp - Fuzz- OD - Compressor - Delay - Tuner and then what ever pedal I throw in to the chain from effect I find myself missing after I sold everything. My speaker situation will probably be two studio monitors in a DAW which i will pick up eventually.
Trying to keep it simple and I am just having a lot of fun playing anything and everything - Even with what I have now its a solid set up.
I just want MOAR
