I've come around a bit on the EHX Ring Thing. I think what was happening when I played it:
1: it's not that much fun on drum machines (maybe a preamp thing?)
2: the memory function screws me up sometimes, which would reset the preset to something with less blend?
3: I think I was expecting more harmonic shift from the waveshape.
4: I didn't really understand the lights on which mode I was on...just realized all lights probably means pitch shifter?
5: it's ugly?
Anyway, it's better on guitar than drum machine by far.
E520 vs. Roman 285: E520 runs on a better computer and probably can auto balance signals resulting in a more HiFi digital sound. E520 has all the routings, modulation, and all that stuff in box. The Roman 285 is pretty basic and would need function generators/mixers to get close. E520 also has a wide range of carrier shapes iirc when I checked it out. (Haven't used either just guessing). E520 is too much for me though, haha.
Vs. 285e: it's analog with a digital carrier. Probably similar in concept to the 185, oscillator, phase shift 90 degrees, mixer, and 2 ring mods.
285e vs 360 20/20: 285e is more clean, but you'd need a good preamp to really use it with guitar. 20/20 is was more dirty and mine probably needs a good balance on the trim pots, but it works with whatever you plug in.
20/20 is weird though because the blend knob seems to be fully wet for ring mod in the center but if you want to use frequency shift (up/down) you've gotta turn the knob to the left of right to get full wet. Or something. It's weird and it trips me up because I can't tell if my ears are playing tricks on me. 20/20 can also only use its own oscillator.
Dandolin, you still got your eurorack? You might be able to patch a frequency shifter from 2 ring mods, a mixer, and an oscillator (a quad, a phaser, or several inverters). 185 style.
Anyway, Roman 285 spin is probably closet to ring thing, without the pitch modes.

i've tried a Ring Thing a couple months back and honestly was surprised by how it sounded. I expected it to suck, instead it was pretty good, specially with a single coil neck pickup ----> BELLS with huge low end (but that's just a setting i like with almost all ring mods ). The whole preset/knob thing is typical on EHX big boxes since a few years, i don't like it but i don't dislike it either, it's just..a way to do it, i guess That being said i only tried it on the fly with straight guitar-ring thing-amp so i don't know how it behaves with loops, dirts, drum machines or synths..
It's a fun pedal for sure. I haven't played with ring thing much more lately. People in my house have and it's their favorite.
Lately my pedal "board" for jams has either been:
Hexe Carrier III -> Phosphene Psuedo-ringmod -> Power Grid (old LG setup style)
Or
Dutch Kazoo -> Melos Ring Mod (finally figured out the power supply) -> Hexe Carrier III
Everybody hates it haha. I'm trying to get choppier on my riffing.
I dunno. Been nostalgic lately.
Mostly just bumping the thread.
I don't really get Deep Space Radio-Bright from demos or descriptions. Everything, to me, comes off as not a ring modulator. It's like a bit crusher/fast tremolo. And the delay blend seems weird. Anyone got one? I'm not really into slow jam ambient...can the thing do metal drums? Paranoid solo? Devo?

I'm about to pull the trigger on a Randy's Revenge. I had one a long time ago and I really loved how musical it was. Anything else I should consider before I pull the trigger?
I'm planning on putting it on a small pedalboard that will be used as my main sound. Likely something along the lines of:
Accountant > Randy's Revenge > Life Pedal (or maybe a Mini or a Fuck?) > Rubberneck > Levitation > amp
My other, bigger board is more focused on ambient sounds:
Tetanus Booster > Superego Plus (loop: Luminary > Tremstortion) > VPJR (tuner out to Pitchblack) > Rainbow Machine > DMM XO > Dispatch Master > ECCOS > amp
Yeah my goal isn't really harsh sounds. I'm really kind of after the sound here:

Not sure if it's actually a ring mod, but I am pretty sure I can get close enough with one
