Nice looking bike, DD! I imagine that it'll be nice to have some gears. Also, that rack is burly. Any idea how much weight it is designed for? I've never seen one that big without attachment points somewhere down the fork.

It’s designed for 10kilograms. Good enough for a stop at the market or the usual parcel pickup.
Good deals: OsbornKT, Phantasmagorovich, UglyCasanova, DarkAxel, Skip, D.o.S, ColdBrightSunlight, Eivind August, Goroth

According to my calculations, that'd be about 22 lbs. :thumb:

If you insist on using outdated units, yes, this is correct

I'm doing my first brevet tomorrow. Pretty pumped for it! Not sure if anyone else does this sort of biking, but I'm very drawn to the non-competitive nature, the length of rides, and the low cost involved. It's a 200k ride up near Mt Adams. Throwing the event page link in here for fun. I'm nervous about battery life on my phone, so I probably won't take many pictures, but I'm sure I'll take a few. I'll post them up once I'm done.

I'm getting ready to undertake a bike project and am looking for ideas and expertise. Mostly curious where people would save money or if I'm overlooking anything that'll make my idea terrible. I'm looking to convert my bike to single speed and replace the fork so that I can have a disk brake front.

My bike has an internal geared hub in the back, so the single speed conversion should be simple, just need a new hub. My friend has been building wheels for years so he'll make it once I get the parts. Is it worth getting a fancy one, like the Paul High Flange Rear? I don't ever imagine going fixed, I just want the bike to work great.

As for the fork, I'm thinking about ordering a Surly Straggler fork and Paul Klamper. I've never had any Paul stuff but people seem to swear by it.

When I do the fork I'll also be swapping from drop bars to flat. Unfortunately, I don't do any long rides anymore, and any fun rides would be more fun on a more playful bike. I don't think I've touched the drops in at least a year. The bike came with backswept comfort bars so I think it'll be great going back to flat, probably will suit the bike better anyway.

Edit for another question: Will I regret getting rid of the back brake? I hadn't really considered it until just now, but it would really open up wheel options to not be mixing a disk front and a rim rear, and it seems like lots of single speed people just have the one brake.

Edit 2: or I could just pick this up...

I would buy the second bike,

as far as going down to a single speed I am not even sure you need a new hub, should just be a single cassette correct?

That Craigslist bike looks sweet for the $. :snax:

(With an internal-gear hub, I think it'd just be easier to get a new hub/wheel. :idk: )

Probably true, would be easier to go back to gears as well, but I think owning more bikes is always the way to go!

Hbomb, that thing is sweet!

Yeah, I'm hopefully going to pick up the second, then keep the current bike in tact for any time I need gears or mega hauling ability.

Thanks Man, bought it new in 1994

I am starting to hit some trails that it can't handle so I am working on adding something with at least a front fork,
I may turn this into a gravel bike once I do that.

Hope you can snag that second bike, I am super jealous of the stuff on your craigslist (binghamton craigslist is a bit of a bummer)
