if only the Slo were stereo

Post by Errant Tiger »

I think it would be my ideal verb. So my question to Slo users who also run in stereo: how do you deal with it? Verb only on one side? Slo plus something else? Two Slos?

IF you need true stereo, you're best off with 2.

If you're running dual mono, then just get two cable splitters and call it good

I am intrigued but I must admit I don't know what you're talking about.

Usually true stereo. But would 2 SLOs not just be dual mono SLO?

Funnily enough I had and loved an M7 until very recently when I got my SLO. Then I started to think I could do better than the M7 so I traded for a Ventris, which I do not love nearly as much as I thought I would. So I might trade it for another M7.

Still doesn’t solve the SLO issue, though.

mid/side is really cool and stupidly simple. its a really old studio trick to make mono effects work on stereo sources. basically you convert your left and right signal to mid and side so that mid=L+R and side=L-R; Decoding dioes the same thing backwards: Right=Mid-side, Left=Mid+side. This allows you to put an effect only on the side signal or mid signal but it appears in the entire stereo field when decoded. The most common use is EQ so that you can remove bass from the side channels to avoid loss of low end with non-perfect stereo imaging. Another quite common trick is to slam the sides of like a stereo drum recording with a compressor, since most ambient info is on the sides you get a bigger sound.

The issue with mid/side is that it's not true stereo, if you sum the signal to mono you will lose the effect on the side signal. You can get around this by delaying one of the channels but then instead things may sound out of phase
