Yeah I saw the trailers and read a review and skipped that one. Glad I did!

A good chunk of the big name actors they got had barely any screentime, there were scenes that felt like they were just added for the sake of adding them, plot lines that didn't go anywhere. I really was excited but it didn't feel like much of a movie at all.
i thought it was a fun weird good time

Starting this tonight solely because of Warpsmasher's praise. That said, I did do further reading and when the creators pitched the show... they said, "HEAVY METAL in 2019". That would have sold me on it too. Then I read more and found out Mary Elizabeth Winstead is in an episode... that also, alone, would have sold me on the show    ... but to recapitulate, as soon as I read Warpsmasher's glowing review... I was in.
LOVE, DEATH, AND ROBOTS.

Love, Death, and Robots was a good time. I kind of want to rewatch it since I originally binged it in a weekend when it came out

I know that feel. I'm holding out on re-watching a show until the last week of this year actually.
Saw a pic of the engagement photos on insta btw... you guys look great!!!

I thought LDR was disproportionately bullshit, with a few really good shorts in there. more about showing off the different animation (which was pretty universally great) rather than anything interesting in terms of ideas.

just watched The Sisters Brothers and loved it. weird western pacing, bleakly humorous yet pretty tragic.

I can't argue this at all. There were definitely some duds in there

I'm a huge Ralph Bakshi fan... sometimes you kind of need to just sit back and enjoy the 'textures' of animation. That's kind of what I was/am going into this show thinking. Just looking for cool visuals. Tnx 4 the commentary though m8s. (Mecha is my purple hair avatar sister!)

it's a shame that so many lean on the "OMG TWIST" trope that kind of rules the short film format. so many of them are either really obvious, stupid or both. BUT, like i said, the animation is always great and you wont get the "FUCK OFF!" out of your mouth before netflix shoves the next one up and you'll have forgot how annoyed you are.

Film School Grad here... that trope... or the 'riddle/puzzle/the film means something' trope are like water-boarding for me.
Related... David Lynch and The Brothers Quay made my favorite short films. Amazing animation and they are what they are.

Yeah LDR was all vaguely enjoyable for the animation and only a couple were actively bad. But the only good stories were the ones adapted from Alistair Reynolds short stories. And I would much rather read them than watch, so... :idk:

I do want to see the sisters brothers glad you liked it

As a guy who grew up with Heavy Metal magazine but actually preferred Epic Illustrated, I'm glad that LDR even exists, and so obviously forgive all its flaws. They draw on top talent for the stories as well as the animation, so I don't mind if some aren't my bag. The diverse mix is challenging on the first binge, but I totally appreciate it now.
It would be cool if Disney fires back with a TV version of Epic Illustrated. I preferred Epic Illustrated because it was like a classier version of Heavy Metal, minus the sex/nudity/crudeness/etc, plus better stories and writing talent (the art talent was top notch for both though). That work ethic for a consistent and firm R rating that keeps Heavy Metal trashy and tasteless, weeeellllll....I guess I don't mind that so much now, and LDR definitely has it. But it's only a part of the total range, which sweeps from the gutter all the way to epic space opera. It's more about the animation than the stories for me, but the love for all things sci-fi really shows and I appreciate that too.
Comic books made me want to draw, and now LDR makes me want to do it video style. Spiderverse too, that was packed with excellent stuff, like those Bill Sienkiewicz Kingpin shots. I think an artistic overhaul much like the 80s through the 2000s for comics is underway now for the video wave. It's long overdue for animation too, it should become taboo for it all to look so similar.
