That's fuckin' hilarious DrMabuse :) I'm glad you could see a bright shing future for Clem. Poor Ultraviolet Catastrophy... but maybe they would've preferred it that way?

I would like for Karlheinz Stockhausen to be my helikopter dad, please:

Years and years ago, a neighbour of mine was a (fairly) well respected composer (mostly the sort of avant garde stuff that I tend to refer to in my philistine like ways as bloody unlistenable plinkety plonk avant garde - very Schoenberg). Anyway he told this story about how he was talking to Stockhausen at a performance of my neighbour's music in Germany and he asked him why did he use the helicopters for this piece? Well... (whether this is true I don't know, this chap could tell some great tales) Stockhausen said that the commissioning body said he had 250,000 euros (or Deutschmarks perhaps in those days) to spend on the production and performance of a new piece of music (in addition to the fees he would get for performing it) but he had to spend the 250,000, he couldn't just pocket the cash. They thought this would allow Stockhausen to create a piece of music for a large number of musicians (I think the funding body had its own orchestra and was hoping Stockhausen would write something for them), but Stockhausen couldn't be bothered to write something for a full orchestra, however he also wanted the glory of having 250,000 to spend on a lavish project... then he thought of how could he spend all that money without having to write a piece for a full orchestra?.. and had the brainwave of hiring the four helicopters and requiring the quartet to rehearse in them multiple times before the first performance... I suspect he was pulling my leg on this one, but it's such a great story that I repeat it here for your delight and general amusement. My friend said if he had had the money to spend on a performance he would've done a deal with Ferrari :)

Sadly neighbours no longer... we moved apart (I couldn't afford to live in that part of London anymore) and then different jobs took me to different towns and I lost touch with him. His name is James Clarke - you can get an idea of his musical style "fiendishly complicated" as he would could call it here (this ones not so hard on the ears):

The Oscillating Hexagons

The Oscillating Hexagons were a particularly out there early Seventies folk prog experimental musical cult group. Six anonymous performers dressed in flowing robes and headresses of varying shades of sky blue, completely covered with tiny silver bells, would hold more bells in their hands while standing in a hexagon formation on stage and would gently 'shimmer' by shaking their bodies, and singing a close harmony Georgian monk type chant while using English Change Ringing on their hand bells in simple repetitive patterns that built up into powerful crescendos. They would then process around the stage in a ritual of arcane magick intended on raising spirits from the earth and sky. They were also known as early pioneers of the use of quadrophonic sound in their live gigs, whose overall wall of sound was described variously by crtitics as 'tinkly', 'clangorous' and 'tintinnabulously flamboyant'

Sadly, the group managed to record only one slab of vinyl, the exotically rare "Invocations to the Otherness" LP on their own Crystalline Delight label, which now fetches astronomical prices in the Japanese Collectors Markets of Hokkaido and Honshu. Shortly after the pressing of a few copies the group became obsessed with idea of raising the Gods of Atlantis and travelled to the Standing Stones of Callanish to take part in a summoning at Midnight on All Hallow's Eve. The next day their multi-hued VW Camper Van was discovered abandoned nearby, while their stage costumes were torn to shreds and scattered about the site, presumably by the storm of surprising intensity that the local crofters had noted was rare for that time of year. Of the performers themselves no trace was ever found, but there are tales told in the drinking dens and cowsheds of Lewis that if you stand in the circle of prehistoric stones on Halloween you can still hear the tolling of their bells, faintly on the wind.
