At some point I got the five books for $5 on Kindle, but I haven't made it past the first three or four pages. Those pages are so turgid to the point where I feel like it's going to be part two of my teenaged attempt to read Tolkien (bailed at the first genealogy of a tree).

My mom loves to trash Tolkien cause of how many characters and their connections, but I had no problem reading em. However, both the Game of Thrones show and the books, I just couldn't do. Funny enough, I loved the first short story collection I read by him, The Sandkings.

I prefer a lot of grrm's non game of thrones writing to game of thrones. I enjoyed Armageddon Rag, it's a really fun concept, very relevant to my interests and I like how it plays out.
The sandkings is good stuff.

That said I devoured the GoT books lol. Though I definitely agree the rape scenes get really uncomfortable and I did not enjoy a lot of parts because of that stuff. I found the series much much worse for that sort of thing and had to stop watching it. Also it got boring

Poppy Z Brite was the most recent one. :) LOL

Just rando fucked up shit. I have a lot of authors I could list I suppose.

Edward Lee, Charlee Jacobs, Richard Laymon, JF Gonzalez, Bryan Smith...etc. Oh Brett Easton Ellis.

Mostly horror related or hardcore in some way.

Though I do enjoy a good coming of age story. :)

I read it. It's rough man, Melville doesn't do you any favors.. don't feel bad if you skip most of a chapter here and there.

I am thoroughly enjoyed it. Found the beginning a little tiresome but got hooked ( ;) ) quick.

Jwar I wanted to read poppy z brite after you last mentioned that book but I couldn't find it in my ebook store.

I'd like to read more horror so please shoot some recs. I've only read American Psychological by Ellis because I'm basic but I loved it and have been meaning to check out more

Ah, Bizarro fiction ... I have some laying around that I may need to dust off ... this stuff intersects with post-modernism stuff

Some of it is bizarro, but most is just straight hardcore horror. hahaha. It's weird how they have genre classifications for this stuff now.

Recommendations....hmmmmm....

OK! For fucked up shit that may test your morality and gut I'd recommend

JF Gonzalez Survivor (seriously fucked up)
Edward Lee The BigHead, Creekers (I read this in one sitting hahaha), GAST, Header 1-3...oh so many Ed Lee titles. There's only a few that I'd call kind of stinkers.
Jack Ketchum Offspring
Bryan Smith Depraved
Poppy Z Brite (anything but that Courtney Love shit)
Charlee Jacob This Symbiotic Fascination

Man I've got so many more. I'm going to make an actual list. :)

I finished Wheel of Time a couple months ago. It definitely replaced Lord of the Rings as my favorite series of all time, no small feat. Actually really looking forward to re-reading it, but working through some other stuff for a bit now that I've rediscovered my love of reading.

After Wheel of Time was "The Traitor Baru Cormorant." That book absolutely destroyed me, but it was incredible. As a pallette cleanser, I read Good Omens because its the only Neil Gaiman-adjacent book I haven't read yet and the show is coming out in a few weeks. Laughed my ass off the entire time, definitely looking forward to the show now.

Now I'm reading NK Jemisin's Broken Earth Trilogy. Probably going to replace Lord of the Rings as my second-favorite series. I'm on the third book now and this is one of the most original and interesting stories I've ever read. It deserves all three consecutive Hugo awards it got.

After I wrap this one up, I'm not quite sure what's next. I tend to stick with speculative fiction in general. Maybe some Discworld.
My music:
