I kinda thought I was done with Muffs :grumpy: :mope: :oldrant:
Although there are already 2 Violet Ram's Head variants in my Muff drawer (Shoe 314 Silver and Earthbound Audio Supercollider '71), I'm still curious about the ARC Shepherd, especially if the gain range is that versatile.

(Reportedly not a Muff at all. :idk: )
Definitely interested in reading more if someone snags this. :hello: :snax:

Shepherd is really high gain. So when I say it sounds great at all ranges of the gain dial, that's true--but it's not like it ever gets "low gain" --there is plenty of usable range and variation, but it ranges from medium high gain to really high gain. Interestingly, it doesn't get all Frippy/synthy at max like the Triangle muff I had. Stays "articulate" for lack of a better word--you'll always get a solid attack I'd warrant. My testing so far has been with Firebird and Teisco-style gold foils (Lollar if that matters). What got my boat floating is that the lowest gain settings don't get all dark or rubbery in the attack--it maintains a consistent character throughout (and I emphasize "in my brief experience"). Which may or may not be to your liking, but I appreciate it. I'll have to do some more testing to figure out whether that's just because the gain control is neutered to only the cool range, or if it's because of ultra-smart filtering or someaught. It's worth keeping on your radar imo, but not setting your hair on fire in a mad dash for your cc.

As for the Ella Megablast--that thing is super-rad. It rips in a nasty "caught a lightning bolt's tail" way in the general vicinity of the way the Plasma pedal and Shoe Pixel among others do, but mostly it's just a comparator fuzz. Which the world wants more of imo. But smartly, Mr. Behan has included a secondary mode that works more like a regular fuzz. :trippy:

I totally understand anyone who doesn't want to buy from EHX anymore given their rep for QC issues, but I just picked up one of the new Sovtek Deluxes, and the put just the right amount of bells & whistles into that thing for me. The combo of mids frequency & level controls with the gate and blend options really allow you to dial in all kinds of mufftoanz without the perennial fear of getting lost in loud / dense / live situations.

Also, an OG ILFer made a video about it! Yay videos!

You weren't kidding. Just got the Ella delivered today. Was only able to play for 5 as my lady is sick. 5 minutes of bliss though. Most interesting fuzz I've played in ages. Can't wait to spend more time with it, super explosive sounding, nasty, rippin' fuzz sounds for sure...
