Blues is the death of electric guitar. A famous/respected guitarist entering their 'blues phase' is the point to stop buying their albums. Eric Clapton has been shite since Cream for this very reason. That and his racism.

Wouldn't it mean that Cream is shite too since he was in a band called "the Bluesbreakers" before that?

Controversy pt 2: Ginger Baker was the only redeeming feature of Cream. Cream were a bit on the shite side.

i think they're ok, one is better than the other. I really like Doyle Bramhall II, I like RJ songs, I like old man EC's voice so there's not much for me to take issue with i guess if you're more about the folk end of blues (as opposed to the solo-heavy blues rock thing that EC helped popularise way back) it wouldn't do much for you

Yeah I'm more on the folk/jugband end. I did a lot of gigs playing that type of material and actually those guys are more open to you using fuzz and octave pedals and whatnot on you bass behind them than your post EC/Hendrix/SRV guitarists.. or if you will... guys that rip off guys that ripped off Albert King's phasing...

Oy where to start with Clapton... I grew up with the guy because my dad loved him, so there's a mix of nostalgia but I also share the fairly common belief that he's cheesy as hell. That said, I did find the documentary about him to be pretty fascinating and revelatory. Maybe it especially hit home because I'm a sober person, but it's nonetheless worth a watch. Gave me some new respect for the guy, even though most of his music isn't my cup of tea.

I wholeheartedly love Derek & The Dominos though.

Also Albert King. And Freddie King. And BB King.

my dude I think that fillmore record is probably the best thing he's ever done. it's very indulgent and, at times, he sounds like he's probably wasted but the songs on it are some of his best.

Clapton's cheese factor is indeed almost as high as his racism is repellent, but all that aside he is a brilliant guitarist. my favorite Clapton sighting-with-accompanying-review-snippet is his appearance in The Last Waltz where he plays "Farther On Up The Road" with The Band. Robertson solos first with his usual blend of dazzling and bullshit, emoting all over the place, after which Clapton as i like to say "carves him up with the cool precision of a surgeon," utterly destroying Robbie without so much as raising an eyebrow. i don't love him, but i respect him...i've never, ever heard him play what i'd consider a "bum note."

I hate it so much

Perhaps the reason you're compelled to admit this is because you're a certain age.
I'm in my mid-40s. I was in high school when this song came out and NO ONE I knew liked it. My 40 year old dad really liked it. That song was basically for people his age, just like Graceland by Paul Simon and other high visibility soft rock hits with world beat leanings.
Weezer doing this was just an attempt by them to stay relevant to a younger demographic, since most of their activity these days is playing 90s music fests and corporate event concerts.
