I'm not the best to answer this since I usually play a crappy (and I mean reaaaall crappy) sollid state amp. However, when we recorded our latest demo with the hardcore band I ran my guitar through a Empress Para Eq and a Crunch Box into a hot rod deluxe I was really pleased with the sound. So if you ask me it def takes pedals well.

I'm leaning more towards the fender hot rod. I tried it out at work and I like the clean sound. What mods would I have to make ? I hear it gets better if you mod it.

A fender hrd won't cut it for prog/metal.
I'm partial to mesa boogie for great fender cleans mixed with high gain sorta thing, there are a few models in your range if you go used and hunt around a bit (I love the F50, DC-5 is pretty good too).

What do you think about a Mesa boogie rectoverb?

I'm actually selling a rectoverb right now, with much regret.
I didn't want to seem like a shill

I do prefer the recto over the other two mentioned.
Some prefer the f50 cleans (I disagree, though I think they're both great) but it can't keep up with the 2nd channel on the recto for prog/metal

The recto was my go to amp for a while. I'm only looking to part with it because I need to pay off the Mark V.
I wish I didn't have to, I miss the straight ahead tone of the recto, I didn't have to constantly fiddle with it to find sounds that work.
Probably my favorite american cleans, and more than enough gain to keep up with the heavy stuff.

The Rectoverb is a great amp you can dial in some very nice clean and som very good distorted sounds.
Would be perfect for indi/metal with lots of fuzz of course.
