I was told by someone (I don't remember who...could have been Ed Sanner) that the direct recorded or "finished" sound was a direction that some companies took and it was partially the motivation behind the line 6 amps....it was never really intended to be a touring work horse, but to sound like a finished and mixed product on a recording...I could totally see fender and others taking that direction too.

I don't know about bassbreakers specifically, but I know that a lot of modern amps I've heard in stores have sounded like that. I was kinda talking about it to my friend before he settle on a twin reverb or something (which I think he would have gone the other way...I don't think he likes the amp all that much).

Chelsea Wolfe uses one live I think? But I haven't seen her live so I don't know what her tone sounds like. I know she uses lots of pedals though.

Corey Y wrote:I have a theory that the Fender Bassbreaker series was designed to sound ideal in stores and demo videos. I've played a bunch of different low wattage tube amps in shops lately and everyone oohs and ahhs over them and raves about how great they sound. Same in videos on Youtube, but every time I played a version it sounded really compressed, narrow in EQ and extra tight in the gain. The kind of thing that makes it cut through in a shop or sound very "finished" in a solo recording. It's the kind of sound I'm used to hearing from guitarists when they bring a specifically crafted tone into recording and it does not at all work in a mix. That's a broad generalization, Marshall tone fits into that definition is some respects, but it has a certain rawness and harmonic content that makes it great at one sound and not very flexible otherwise (not true of all, just the typical "modern" Marshall tone). The Bassbreakers don't have any really standout characteristic to the tone, it all just sounds like it's meant to sound great for people who are playing solo.

I could be wrong, taste is subjective, just a thought I had while playing a few the other day.
Can confirm from working in a music store. They’re fantastic in lower volume settings if you want that specific thing, but they lack versatility and the compression is really hard to get past. The 45 is a little bit better than the small ones but not by much.

I have a couple pedals that need a bit of work - one I got given by somebody and the other I got really cheap - that I kind of want to fix up and sell on to raise some money. Does that make me an evil flipper?

Nah man. People buy houses and cars and shit and do that all the time. If you sell broken bullshit with scotch tape holding it together as "recently gone through" (also I hate that statement. .. gone through.. ) then you're an evil flipper ;)

Dude I have been playing 7 strings since 1998, and I finally got an 8 string a few months ago and it's a game changer. I have really bonded with the instrument. It's fantastic. Get one, you'll never regret it.

I've only had my 7 for about 6 months now and ERGs have totally reinvigorated my interest in guitar :thumb:

I've been really craving a little multimode digital delay. Which one rules? I'm thinking like Boss DD-5/7, Flashback, or EHX canyon. Maybe the answer is Nemesis? I've never really even looked at those. I want something that can do an articulate digital delay, a reverse delay, and any other interesting things is a plus. I already have my main delay sound very happily covered by the Rubberneck, but I like having all those little tricks accessible for when I'm stacking loops.

I bought a cymbal stand for my nephew from Sweetwater (and a mic stand years ago). Dude calls me every now and again.

I've been attempting to delete my LinkedIn account that I was required to get years ago (they refuse to remove my account via the Internet...I've even mailed them years back). I gave up on that.

Sweetwater dude just tried to friend me on LinkedIn...it's getting creepy out there. (They send me updates....I hate LinkedIn)

As a friend of mine said (not an exact quote probably), "They are a cult".

Same. Don't need one but I've always wanted to try one. I'm just not to keen on "metal" style guitars.
