opinions on what effect this is: square wave vibrato?

starting at 5 seconds in.
is that a square wave vibrato? doesn't seem like a square wave tremolo.
perhaps is is just 2 notes alternating extremely quickly on the keyboard or sequenced that way, but would to me be a cool guitar effect. anyone have a pedal that has this quick of speed and square wave on non amplitude modulation? i bet a well made ring mod would be able to do this like a moogerfooger, but a cheaper solution would be nice to hear about

An arpeggiator should get you there. Ring mod could do it with the right carrier, but will not have an in key reference unless you dote on it and bake brownies.

It's the note and an octave above alternating quickly. Arpeggiator, wizard of pitch, pitchfactor probably but can't be sure...

i don't think it is that great of a shift as i have a momentary octave up pedal and even as fast as i can tap it would be way too dramatic, hence thinking it maybe just a square wave vibrato.
i will look at some wizard of pitch demos...

Real old-style DDL with sample rate modulation hit by a square-wave lfo should be able to hit that.

Sounds like it could be a 7th interval instead of an entire octave, but my ears are far from trained.
Edit: 9th. At least that's what noodling on my keyboard tells me.
I think any of the suggestions thus far are feasible.

Reports are that it cannot do this cleanly, at least not as a matter of time modulation. I would futz with its pitch tools, instead, seeing if you can get the interval to hard jump.hangwire wrote:i wonder if my pigtronix echolution deluxe can be coaxed that way... will try laterGone Fission wrote:Real old-style DDL with sample rate modulation hit by a square-wave lfo should be able to hit that.

Check out the Parasit Studios site. The Arcadiator or Side Scroller do some of that pulse width modulation magic.

It actually is called "tremolo", but from piano terminology where it means to alternate between two notes very quickly.
You could definitely get the same effect using a Whammy controlled by one of those Molten MIDI devices. Really Whammy + any sufficiently programmable MIDI device (including Laptop).
Another bulky option would be a EHX HOG2 with an EHX 8-Step hooked up to the control input.
In fact, an 8-Step hooked up to any pitch shifter that'll take it would do the trick. Perhaps 8-Step plus a PS5, PS6, or Pitchfork?

I can hear those intervals - it's definitely two notes an octave apart transitioning really fast. the reason it doesn't sound so dramatic is because it is really fast, which to our ears makes it sound a little more like a strummed chord or something like that. old game console audio chips didn't have much DSP to work with for effects, this is most definitely done with a sequencer and it's probably 32nd or 64th notes speed.

Bartimeus has a good thought on 8-Step plus pitch shifter. Alternatively, I suspect it would be a criminal underuse of the Harpegiator algorithm, but a great excuse to buy a Pitchfactor of H9, no external device necessary.

Tapping Van Halen style will do it.
Also Midfi Pitch Pirate on square wave.
I wonder if the Copilot Orbit could do it? Not sure how wide frequency it modulates. Should test that.
But seriously, I'd just try tapping first.

Definitely the note and one octave above alternating very quickly via square wave LFO.
And my first thought for an effect is the Mid-fi Pitch Pirate. The Dwarfcraft Pitch Grinder or Wizard of Pitch could do this as well I would assume? Though it'd be way cool if you could finger tap it and play with different intervals per goroth.
