1000% this. I'm being a little cautious about my purchases, but I don't have a big goal of what I want to learn and/or what sounds I want. So far, modular has made me approach music making so differently than anything before that I'm verrrrry much enjoying the somewhat aimless discovery.
saaame, I feel a little locked right now. I thought I had a good idea of what I was going for with this modular thing, but I performed out with it this weekend and it completely changed my feelings about it. I REALLY love Ears now. looped like mad and didn't sequence a damn thing.. that waz awesome.

I've found a lot of ambient & techno kind of artists who use modular synths; can anyone recommend the noisier or more abrasive fuckers out there?
i'm glad i can call you a friend. even if i'll never see you again

Yeah Ears looks so rad. Also I haven't even begun to consider what performance would do to change my outlook, sure that's an immense factor. Re: more abrasive artists using modular, I'm guessing DoS would be a good point man on that

also, at the base level, you're just switching between Tempo and each out. so if you use it JUST as a clock, it takes no time at all to move to Tempo, click, set at 150, click. move to 1, click, set at 3x, click. move to 2, click, set at /9. it's really super, SUPER quick.

...... i'm a fan.

VultyPulpy - STUMBLE-BUNNY BUDDIES FOR LIFE!!
I'm also a fan, except shaving 2hp off of my trigger module solves my space issue with a distortion.
But yes, pams could replace most things.
It's mega enticing for me working with just 104... I will say that having no menus would be nice, but at that size, modules like the Pam's and the Disting that do tons of shit in a small space are pretty much as appealing as it gets.

Ahem:

Coil's mid-era drone/noise stuff is full of modular -- Queen of the Circulating Library, Remote Viewer, etc. Late 90's to '03. Drew McDowall still does a lot of noise-y modular in his solo stuff:
https://drewmcdowall.bandcamp.com/
But that's a little more tempered than what you're looking for probably.
Gnod leveled my brain at Roadburn during their modular set, but the recordings don't do the harshness justice to my experience of leaning up against the PA.

Trogotronic is MITB, obviously, and they do modular offerings although they're probably more famous for their standalone synths (both the company and the band).
Wolf eyes used modular gear for a minute, too. This is kind of a hilarious video on that:

But I think part of the reason that a lot of noise folks eschew modular for more traditional stand alone synths (or contact mic based stuff) is the workflow.
1.It's much easier to get a box designed for noise to make noise than a modular -- I mean, take a look at the HNW synth in BST right now. That thing is fantastic, and it's going to cost you less than the average module.
2. If I'm going to make noise, I'm probably not going to pick up my 3U first, I have other tools for that application. Could I? Sure, but I could also replace all the guitar parts on a thrash record with an oboe. Same notes, maybe not the same desired intensity or timbre.
3. Speaking of intensity, lots of modern noise seems to be very performance driven, and it's a lot easier to get into the right head space when you can bash the shit out of something rather than turn a knob and patch things.

:idk:

Also shameless semi-modular, noise-synth, guitar, ipad spam from this summer via myself and coldbrightsunlight:

The Belgrad is an amazing filter! It's so versatile; from subtle sound shaping to gnarly FM. It's one module that I really don't think I'll ever be getting rid of

it actually did TOO much for me. i love filters, but i would tweak and tweak and TWEAK and get something fun, then watch it collapse as i tried to adjust one parameter. for sure my fault, not the module's. it's a pimp box of pimperish pimp nipples.

i like the Happy Nerding HNVCF, i looooove the TRSHMSTER and MotoMouth, and am suuuuper butts excited about the Jove that should be here this weekend.

Jove is on my radar too, Mylars vid makes it sound real nice. I love the layout and feature set. I feel like Jove + 3 Sisters would be a dope pair...

I wanted to DIY it, but its surface mount :(

Ah man, I got 4 free knurlies with a module. They look so good but I’m afraid to open up the baggie and fall in love. How much do they cost MrNovember? I used to ignore them because my case was 4-40, now I’m m3...

Traded a module with an Aussie that finally got here; Z-dsp with Halls of Valhalla. The scary thing is that Sean Costello lives in Seattle, I really might have to give him a bro hug if I ever randomly meet him some day. I just love his reverbs so much.
I've been searchin' for the dolphins in the sea.
