Blows my mind having access to those sounds and not living in a world as connected as ours. No demo vids, just figure out the shot yourself. Have fun!
I've never watched a demo video with the intention if figuring out how to use something? That's what manuals are for?
Is this why google shows me tons of youtube videos whenever I try to figure out how to do anything? Because people actually like that? I don't have time to watch a ten minute video whenever I'm trying to navigate a sub-menu.
Well they also don't have history to their advantage. Now we all know that JUPITER sound. I get overwhelmed thinking how cool it would be to get the first 1. JUPITER 2. EMS PUTNEY.
I've been trying to dig up for years who bought this stuff outside of the studio realm. Both were fairly affordable at the time.

Correction then, the EMS was fairly affordable. I read a story about a guy and his Dad buying a JUPITER when it came out...they just took it home!

What I mean by demos, is more along the lines of getting an idea of what something sounds like and to see if you want it. I know ARP had some demo records to get an idea of the sounds but still that is way more involved than farting out an internet search.

I can't rationalize another synth but I always catch myself looking at 90's rack synths...but they have gotten expensive.

I don't know what expensive means in this context but there are tons for sale at or around 100$. There is a bad dream I have of roping together a bunch of old rack synths and puking Zillions sequences through them until I am Miami Vice himself.
But, they are big.
They don't usually sound great.
I'm not going to figure out how to edit the sounds.
I'll still probably end up with an E-Mu Planet Phatt some day.
The stuff I was looking at made it up to $400. Where as less than 4 years ago they would have been $100. Yes, too goddamn big too. I have enough as it is and prefer to mess with pedals anyway (my taste are going backwards!).
*EDIT - Jesus' hairy dick - bad example it's busted.

That is kinda crazy to think about. Most old synths were pretty well restricted to rich people. The Jupiter 8 originally cost the equivalent of $12500 today:
The story is on Muff Wiggler. That's was started my nausea. I'll see if I can find it.

I can't find it but come on! Imagine waking up, going to the music store with your parents and getting even say a Jupiter 4 in 1978. That's unreal! Or an ARP Oddy in 1972.
I would have never left the house if that was me.
I did find a guy who bought an EMS Synthi used for $500 in 1975 too!

I love Ensoniq stuff (in theory) so mainly the ESQ-M. Some Roland racks. The Korg Wavestation Rack actually looks like it went down in price (I still don't really want it cause space). I heard the Digitech 90's racks are the tits and dirt cheap (maybe not true though?).
Space is one of the reasons I found it is always easy to rationalize a pedal. That and I have TR 707 which has separate outs so I like to throw it through all sorts of silly things.
