I've been struggling with depression lately. I've been having a hard time eating food and doing much of anything lately.

i feel like i'm in a similar situation except i don't know whether or not i'd call it depressed, i used to be super miserable and self-loathing a few years ago but it subsided for a while and now that everything kinda went down the drain again i'm just super apathetic and anxious around people so i rarely leave the house.
is there anyone you can talk to? in person is best but if you ever feel like real people are like talking to a brick wall and imaginary internet people might be better feel free to PM me anytime.
keeping shit bottled up is the one thing i learned absolutely not to do, even if it took years to figure it out.

yeah I have been weening in and out of it for awhile now, but it's more intense than it ever has been in the past. sometimes I'll just feel like randomly bawling my eyes out for no reason. I don't really understand why I feel so sad all the time. depression and anxiety run in my family, so i'm thinking it's not something I really have control over. luckily I live in the same town as my mother who i'm really close to so i've been getting a lot of support from her. I'm seeing a therapist next week and i'm optimistic about the future, I just am pretty broken up emotionally. I've also been having issues with my stomach off and on for years which is likely linked to my depression but maybe also a physiological issue, so hopefully I can get some answers there too, been seeing doctors for that off and on.

anyways I really appreciate you reaching out to me, thank you :) please feel free to do the same if you want someone to talk to. I'm overtly empathetic.

hmm yeah stuff like that definitely does get passed down each generation, my mother and her mother both dealt with similar problems and attempted suicide at points so it can difficult not to feel like it's inevitable, I think understanding the causes and patterns and stuff like that is really important but it's equally important to not just accept them thinking they can't be changed. i have a bad habit of over-thinking things to try and reach a complete understanding but neglecting to find a solution.
you're getting much needed support so that's a big step already, i don't see my mum very often but every time i do it brings me back down to earth a bit. stick with it :thumb:

I played some slap bass back in the '80s.

I can't bring myself to do it........EVER! I find it akin to fingernails down a blackboard. Just sound awful. The only person who sounds good doing it is Flea as far as I'm concerned.
But I won't hold it against you though.

Well, there were plenty of people who played in that style before Flea. I'm a big fan of Louis Johnson, Larry Graham, Melvin Gibbs, Bootsy, et al. It doesn't sound awful to me, it often just sounds dated.

Yeah, if you use it way too much. I slap a little bit here and there when I feel a song sounds better with it. I've seen bands that the bassist slaps every single note of every song and none of it fit.

Agree. Used sparingly, it's a nice spice.

I've been listening to stuff like this, which I think would be 1000% better if there were no slap bass:

Slap sounds very dated to me, and yeah I understand it's been used a lot longer than Flea. It's just a matter of taste I guess. I'm just more a fan of smooth finger style bass like James Jamerson. His bass style is timeless and brilliant. No one can dispute that.

Slapping is awesome, it's just a technique, it's all about how you use it. I really like the double thumping squarepusher does, it's kind of subtle and nuanced. There's a bassist in a mathcore band I like that only slaps and it's pretty cool and also silly as shit.

James Jamerson is one of my bass heroes, his contributions to the instrument are vast. Hell, my strings are the same kind he used (god that thump).

I was a big fan of these guys back in the day (this's a horrible recording, their live show {as you can imagine} was much better):

Slap bass is fucking garbage.

But that's totally due to knowing 'those people' people who play slap bass.
