Strymon pedals have a sound/sheen to them I would describe as clinical hifi. Even in the pedals that try to sound lofi. It's weird.
Some people really seem to dig it, but I don't like the way it affects guitar tone. I don't have an explanation as to why :idk:

Man, I always thought that was a ancient TGP tan colored myth. I've owned an El Cap since release (before it was cool/uncool yo  ) + tried a bunch of their pedals and haven't heard any weird alteration at all, even when A/Bing with a bypass looper.

Not discounting your opinion, though. Different setups/ears = different results.

Pretty sure Rusty is talking about the sound when the pedal is on, not bypass coloration.

There is some truth to things like that. In ring mods, diodes have a certain action time that can somewhat smooth the wave. Digital ring mods usually do the perfect ideal situation and lose that transition time of the diodes making it kinda less fuzzy. Same with oscillators and a lot of other things. They can account for that kind of stuff, but it is all interpretation and perspective.

I agree with Rusty on that one...Same reason I didn't like the newer Roland boutiques...They just sounded clinical HiFi (good term).

On the other hand, I can see people digging them because they are potentially more easy to deal with in different situations (di, amp, etc) and general features. Ain't for me though. I'd rather just mess with a boss or DigiTech pedal.

I understood that, but have heard people also claim both scenarios. :thumb: You can set the max delay time on the El Cap and quickly compare to the dry. Honestly, though, I've accepted that this can be a quirk of a lot of pedals and have become much happier because of it. I would have immediately offed my Transroom and Echo Degrader if stuff like this got in the way of cool as shit sounds.

I completely agree with the hifi statement. Too slick. Same problem I have with Neunaber stuff—very pretty, but not for me.

So, I still think the price is bullshit, and the creation of the pedal is bullshit, but I never hear Failure riffs on demos and that 15 second riff from 4:38 sounds beautiful.

Yeah, I'm talking about the pedals when engaged. I just don't like them with guitar, into an amp's front end. Pingy attack, eq voiced too bright?
But a synth/sampler/drum machine setup? Strymon and clinically hifi fx are exactly the type of pedals to shine in a mixer's aux sends

This.
I wasn't super crazy about my Deco on guitar (except when I played in stereo, which I quit doing for logistical reasons), but it sounds sooooooooooooooooooooooooo nice with my synths.

Maybe Strymon will put out a digital fuzz pedal next. $300 and comes with two presets available. Of course it won't have midi or USB, but you can buy their optional Fave switch for $50 if you want to have a third preset.

I would say by the end of the year (or next winter NAMM), they'll have the big box version (ala TimeLine, Big Sky, Mobius) drive/distortion/fuzz with MIDI, Presets etc.

And then they'll get sued by Positive Grid.
