Commissioning art for album etc. questions

Post by goroth »

Hey dudes!

We're planning on not going diy for our release and I was wondering, when you comssion an album cover is it just the album you are talking about? Then do you get in touch about the rights to use it for tshirts and shit, or should you make some sort of all in one deal thing?

Who usually owns the rights to the image?

I'm aware that this will vary, just trying to work out of there is a praxis I should be aware of before making a dick out of myself.

you should discuss how you can use the image(s) when you come to an agreement with the artist.
the artist retains the right to the image, unless you purchase the exclusive rights from them.

Yeah Voerking is right on the money.

Something else to consider -- depending on what the concept for the sleeve art winds up looking like -- might be getting the same artist to do something different for merch (including and obviously the bitchin' back patch).

Good thread, thanks for asking. I would love to commission some work from gunslinger burrito for the flurry of albums I'm gonna release if he would have me. His stuff is great and I think would fit well with my music (no offense intended if he thinks my music sucks).
