So is the lettering just the transfer hanging out on it then? I think I remember you mentioning playing around with that?

I have been using gun stock dye on steal. Mask, then dye, then acetone. It is not etched, but looks cool and if you use a sponge you can make it look gnarly ;)

Guess I'm googling gun dye today :) Looks great. Might be a time to get some aluminum plates too....

Yeah the lettering is a clear coated transfer

Actually, that example I gave was kind of a shitting example of what I am talking about. It just shows you can make the enclosure look gnarly. That enclosure was some sort of steel.

Here is a better example, the thing I built for the secret Santa this year. They plates aren't actually etched. I added a mask (the inverse of what you see). Dyed the metal black (using a sponge to make it look grimey). Then I scrubbed it with acetone. The acetone removes the mask to expose the undyed aluminum.

Does that make sense? They make aluminum and steel gunstock dyes.

So basically like doing a reverse etch but instead of using acid, using the dye etc?

What are you dying it with and how though? Not sure I understand. I've looked into stuff like this in the past but couldn't find a viable option.

Gun stock dye. Blot it on the metal and the metal turns black. The remove the mask with acetone to reveal the undyed metal. Worked great on stuff like steel that doesn't like to be etched.

I actually walked in a Walmart today to look for this stuff but they didn't have it or I couldn't be patient enough to ask a worker. It was a creepy mega walmart so think I'm just going to order online....
