Re: Deluxe Big Muff Power Supply Mod
You called me forth
... i'll do my best to help
Chuck us a gut shot, (it's IC based isn't it, the fuzz section aswell as the comp?) I haven't experimented with these old transformer based EHX pedals but I don't think it'll be as simple as would be nice... infact it's rather a dangerous game to play with mains transformers i'm afraid... you'll have to bypass the power supply section of the pedal and then put the new voltage in there (getting the new voltage is easy though, just drill a hole, stick a DC Jack in and your done pretty much)
Although... I wonder if maiming a vintage pedal is a good move... might it not be more valuable to sell that and buy a normal big muff and soul preacher compressor? or even a custom big muff... those Deluxe ones are getting rarer and rarer, it mayyy be possible to do it simpler but I wouldn't want to risk an old unit like that.

Re: Deluxe Big Muff Power Supply Mod
Wow, that was fast! Thanks man
No worries, was just checkin' before bed
Well the problem is... being IC based, it uses a bipolar power supply, which you can't just take from a standard 9V DC jack you'll have to build a daughter board circuit with a LT1054 chip (I don't think a MAX1044 will deliver enough mA) delivering 5V & -5V to the board, that's where it gets complicated if you haven't built much before and you risk crapping out the unit which would suck (although it'd still be salvageable with the right knowledge) but that would be the easiest way without heavy modification to the circuit.
I (or another forum member perhaps closer to you) could build you the daughterboard though and you could install it if you feel confident or I could perhaps see if I could find someone local to you to carry out the mod for you.
Funny you should mention using a Black Finger and a normal muff, I've actually done that before. It wasn't the same, although it was it's own sound.
Sorry, I meant the soul preacher there, not the Black Finger and it's not a normal muff it's IC based which accounts for its different character to standard muffs, but if you could get an IC based muff *strokes chin* although no Big Muffs sound alike anyway so that still might not help.
You certainly did get a deal on those units though, wish I could find one that cheap!
