How do you feel about that first Maylene and the Sons of Disaster record, though?
Maylene is pretty cool, I was really into their first two albums for a while and they're good drunk jams but not a fantastic band by any means

I have not listened to practically any of the music on the last page. I guess Patti Smith and Television, years ago. Is that unpopular?

I think Loveless is overrated at a really bizarre level. I feel like the behaviour, exaggerated rumours aside, of the members during recording was a massive piss-take and arrogant to a painful degree. I get pedantry and artistic preference, but nearly bankrupting a label because of your whims and having a permanently shitty attitude about it makes it really hard for an album to resonate w/ me.

:/

PS. Soundtracks For The Blind/Swans Are Dead (including them as one because live album with songs from the former, but better?) was their peak.

I dunno if it's unpopular but I still like the first few Donnas albums, they held up to me better now then other things I liked then. I loved the first white stripes album when it came out but can't really sit through it anymore.

I also don't get how the newest 3 or so Oh Sees albums (which sound more Ty segal esq to me) got bigger then the earlier stuff which is wayyy better (albeit less accessible to most).

I just checked out a Brand New song on YouTube. Made it 15 seconds. What in the world.

Instead of Brand New, listen to this Blofeld Demo on youtube. It's almost certainly better:

Beat me to it! Like... how could you know in 15 seconds?

As far as that goes I've fallen in love with a few of their songs in 15 seconds, so.

"Tommy Gun" is definitely less than 15 seconds to love it.

This is the song I checked out, was one of the first that popped up on YT:

I think if I didn't have visuals (the ridiculous, flailing around emo backup vocalist with the sideways hat, especially), I might have been more tolerant of it. Tommy Gun was ok, but the lyrics made me cringe.

I know these guys are some of your faves, Case, so I'm sorry to rag on em! I just kind of universally despise newer emo—I think the closest I can get to that degree of heart-on-sleeve earnestness would be maybe Clarity-era Jimmy Eat World. Or Blake Schwarzenbach at around 75% of his mope potential.

I think I'm about 10 years older than you, and god knows I've had plenty of experiences of guys who are 10 years older than I am, telling me they can't deal with the stuff that I love :D
