My wife and I watched the first season together. It was good for a laugh or three with all the not-so-subtle 70's band references in the character names, but we eventually lost interest. I may pick it up again in the future when I'm in the mood for ridiculously over-the-top and perpetually-character-narrated action.wfs1234 wrote:Anyone else wayching JoJo's Bizarre Adventure? I am currently all about Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress and have been plodding through a few of Crunchyroll's latest simulcast offerings and Netflix's "original" anime. Has anyone else been a tinge underwhelmed by the clunky CGI animation style in Ajin?

I've suffered through knights of sidonia, rakuen tsuihou and a few other similar pieces because the execution wasn't too bad but Ajin was just too much. Looks almost as bad as the 'anime-influenced' american shit like RWBY.

I sometimes wonder if I'm actually watching cut scenes in an early Playstation game with Ajin. Characters eyes are about as expressive as nostrils, and their movements are like bad white people dancing. The manga left me with high hopes for the anime, which may soon be dashed. I'm hoping Netflix (or the random 3rd world CG animation studio branded with their name) doesn't also ruin any other manga from the same period in anime form, e.g., Fort of Apocalypse.backwardsvoyager wrote: I dropped it cos i couldn't bear the animation![]()

Well that's because Ajin the manga was total shit, so it's unsurprising the show was total shit. Of course it immediately got a second season greenlit because Japan is the Empire of Shit Taste.
No one talks bad about Knights of Sidonia though, even the anime. Nihei Tsutomu is a fucking god and should be recognized as such.

The only thing I really made note of was I saw a million Bakuon displays while walking around in stores. They were definitely plugging the final volume of Boku Dake Ga Inai Machi as well (which I bought there, sooooooo fuckingggggggg good even if they ruined the anime at the end).
I'm not watching anything this season cause I needed a break, hoping Summer will treat me well.

Summer could be good. At the very least there's new Shokugeki no Souma.
Anyone else following Project Itoh? I watched Harmony last night, gonna watch Shisha no Teikoku soon. I was gonna wait for the last one but it'll probably be another year almost with the studio having gone bankrupt.

I'm reading Boku no Hero Academia because I'm lazy and needed a no-effort series to keep me distracted.

That still seems to be a pretty dismal feces to gold ratio. Based on my limited perspective of the contemporary anime scene via Crunchyroll (primarily), Netflix, Amazon video, a prior Funimation subscription, and info posted on the Anime News Network website, I would agree with assertions regarding a general decline in the quality of anime the past few seasons. Last season was especially poop-ridden IMO, and I was unable to tolerate a number of shows beyond the first few episodes. This season seems a tad improved, but nowhere near as decent overall as what I was watching a few years ago (i'll neglect to mention specific titles given fear of the further wrath of Strange Talesbackwardsvoyager wrote:every. fucking. time.Strange Tales wrote:Of course it immediately got a second season greenlit because Japan is the Empire of Shit Taste.

Last season was bad, but Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu was absolutely ace. Can't wait for the second season.
And mention away this season. I've watched 0 shows from this season so I could care less.

yeah, for sure. I liked KonoSuba, and Durarara of course. but apart from those three last season was pretty horrendous.Strange Tales wrote:Last season was bad, but Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu was absolutely ace. Can't wait for the second season.
be wary though, Crunchyroll etc tend to focus on the shit shows most of the time. i would recommend going to http://anichart.net/ and just perusing everything that's airing any given season and picking out the ones that look interesting. the better shows fly under the radar more often than the shitty ones, i pretty much avoid any 'news' related to anime where possible, because let's face it, we're one of the shittiest demographics out there.ck3 wrote:That still seems to be a pretty dismal feces to gold ratio. Thankfully, Crunchyroll has been building upon its catalogue of old school titles (though some recent entries appear subpar at first glance). I can only tolerate so much random ecchi, fan-service, high-school-academy-oriented-tropey-teen-drama nonsense before moving on to something else ... though I'm somehow continuing to watch a few shows with the aforementioned content (for now).
also feel free to mention any specific titles regardless. ST is an asshole, i'm an asshole, feel free to be an asshole too

i legitimately think Yuru Yuri is the masterpiece of our generation so my opinion is obviously worthless, but everyone else is wrong so

I almost began watching that series along with 8 or so other shows last season, but had to be miserly with time because of various life responsibilities and work-related exhaustion. I think it's still somewhere in my Crunchyroll cue.Strange Tales wrote:Last season was bad, but Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu was absolutely ace. Can't wait for the second season.

Anime from prior seasons the past 5 or so years that I enjoyed watching (in no particular order) was Gintama, Beelzebub, Gosick, Hunter x Hunter, Akame Ga Kill, Sunday without God, Magi, Sword Art Online (season 1), The Future Diary, Psycho Pass, Beyond the Boundary, Attack on Titan, Outbreak Company, Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet, Brynhildr in the Darkness, Aldnoah.Zero (Season 1), Black Bullet, Is This a Zombie?, Guilty Crown, Deadman Wonderland, Gate, Samurai Flamenco, World Conquest Zvezda Plot, Is It Wrong to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon?, Parasyte-the maxim-, Charlotte, Erased, Schwarzes Marken, and The Devil Is a part Timer. Mind you, these were highlights from countless hours of dorktastic anime viewing that included a number of other offerings ... and probably receive a "shit sandwich" rating from others.

Does Yuri Yuri truly contain twice the Yuri of other anime? I also enjoyed Durarara, though it seemed difficult to follow at times given all the other shows I was concurrently watching at the time. Bungo Stray Dogs has a similar feel to Durarara IMO, though it seems to lack a certain something comparatively.backwardsvoyager wrote:be wary though, Crunchyroll etc tend to focus on the shit shows most of the time. i would recommend going to http://anichart.net/ and just perusing everything that's airing any given season and picking out the ones that look interesting. the better shows fly under the radar more often than the shitty ones, i pretty much avoid any 'news' related to anime where possible, because let's face it, we're one of the shittiest demographics out there.

Thanks for the tip regarding anichart. When I accessed the site, I was immediately reminded about the upcoming D. Gray Man sequel (or is it a reboot?). I actually stumbled upon Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress entirely by chance, and it is decidedly one of my favorites from the current anime season. I tend to gravitate toward darker/violent supernatural shonen Anime for some reason and am always a sucker for a dystopian and/or post-apocalyptic setting. All of what I view nowadays is via streaming services to which I have paid subscriptions, which often limits the quality of options on hand.

i've seen maybe two thirds of those. i dropped a couple, like Gate and Schwarzesmarken, but mostly because of not being into the genre/setting.ck3 wrote:Anime from prior seasons the past 5 or so years that I enjoyed watching (in no particular order) was Gintama, Beelzebub, Gosick, Hunter x Hunter, Akame Ga Kill, Sunday without God, Magi, Sword Art Online (season 1), The Future Diary, Psycho Pass, Beyond the Boundary, Attack on Titan, Outbreak Company, Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet, Brynhildr in the Darkness, Aldnoah.Zero (Season 1), Black Bullet, Is This a Zombie?, Guilty Crown, Deadman Wonderland, Gate, Samurai Flamenco, World Conquest Zvezda Plot, Is It Wrong to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon?, Parasyte-the maxim-, Charlotte, Erased, Schwarzes Marken, and The Devil Is a part Timer. Gosick fucking rules. I absolutely loved that show. I'm a sucker for that faux gothic european shit, and mystery is probably my favourite genre alongside comedy.
Parasyte was fantastic too, one of the most consistent shows in recent years IMO, just really well executed and paced from start to finish, which i rarely feel.
I also think Brynhildr was pretty underrated. Stuff like Zvezda, Black Bullet, Charlotte and a few others were shows i definitely liked but they got that sort of abrupt ending or shitty pacing towards the end that's so common nowadays.
*Yuru Yuri, it's high level yuri but basically all implied, vanilla, sappy slice of life comedy style shit. I love it so much but it's basically a terrible show, i accidentally recommended it to a female friend once, did not go well.ck3 wrote:Does Yuri Yuri truly contain twice the Yuri of other anime? I've been liking Bungo Stray Dogs but yeah, i wouldn't put it on the same level as Durarara. Durarara just has a great 'universe' to it, so many more great characters than most shows.
Bones is one of my favourite studios though, so i'll hold out hope for BSD.
