The How The Fuck Do I Get This Sound Thread

Post by chuckjaywalk »

I have loved this song for 20 years but have no idea how to get the sound she hits in the second half. I think there's a wah involved but I'm not sure.

flanger. flanger? flanger. by the looks of her pedalboard probably boss flanger. sounds a bit too feedback-y/intense to be phaser.

Dude!! That is totally flanger. I need to try to cop it with my Ibanez DFL-10 since I don't have a BF-2 at this point.

That's a phaser, not a flanger. 100% sure. Try a BOSS PH-2. Sounds like 10-stage phasing with quite a lot of resonance. Repeat: NO flanger.

See my BOSS PH-2 video for comparison (1:00 comes close already):

In the original track it sounds a bit different, though, as if the phaser has been controlled manually by a treadle.

Ok, I got one!!!

Guitar solo at 1:08 and again at 2:00...that TONE!!! How does it get it so creamy and smooth? My overdrive sounds have grit and growl. Is that a compressor with the sustain cranked? WTF is he DOING?!!! I want it. I've always WANTED it.

If anyone knows for sure what Krieger's rig consisted of, I'd love to hear it.

Most of Krieger's recordings were SG -> Twin Reverb, but remember that he finger-picked everything, which is going to give you a rounder, smoother tone. According to this page, he claims he used a Maestro Fuzztone sometimes, but there's no way in hell that's what he used on that song, the Fuzztone is way too raspy

I play fingerstyle Jazz primarily so that's great news about the fingerpicking...Must have just had that twin cranked so high on gain that the highs were fully in compression to be that smooth and without texture??! I've noticed when I play highs with my OD cranked (into my clean amp) things start to get very smooth and almost sound like that. I'll try just moar gainz on my amp!! I play through a VOX Tony Bruno (and super super clean almost all the time, because jazz), which should be able to get into a similar tonal region as a Fender Twin, unless I'm smokin' crack. The neck pickup on my Les Paul will have to be an SG for now...no plans to pick one of those up anytime soon. Haha.

Now to work on my chops...

But no bullshit...THAT song was what made me decide to cast my electric bass aside, and take up guitar many years ago. I'm not even a Doors fan really. I had forgotten about it entirely until this thread came up.

Ah, I'll try that as well. Good point. Could be tone rolled back on guitar and treble back up on amp, cuz it doesn't sound muffled at all, but its soooo round and smooth.

Lot of plate on most stuff of that budget/size in that era as well.

Try a *not spring* reverb to get smooth.

ok here's a dumb one. this is probably covered in depth on some nirvana forum somewhere and/or somewhat basic feedback looping of which I am quite ignorant, but

anyone have ideas on how to recreate the oscillating wobbly feedback from Radio Friendly Unit Shifter? I wonder how they're doing it live below? Also weird that it starts right before they walk out. Is some roadie hiding in the shadows triggering a loop? It does sound similar but slightly different from the album version so it seems live.

It's probably a recording.
IIRC, the sound is from the use of a Sansamp classic, Small Clone and Polychorus set to insane warble all at the same time.

The warble is from Kurt's Polychorus with the depth turned all the way up. Not sure exactly what distortion he used for it, but probably some combo of his standard DS-2 and maybe a sansamp as was already stated, although I also remember reading that he started using the DOD Grunge sometime in 1993 too.

There are settings on the web where you see Kurt's settings. And also settings found from fans to use with more recent Polychorus. I had one and could be pretty close to this sound.
Fuzzonaut about the RM-1N:
"Amp in a box"?
No, there's no amp in there - tone fairies and feedback goblins live inside this box.
