But, also, (since it's been a couple of pages) representative democracy > direct democracy, even if the result is me having to vote for Hillary rather than Bernie. I'm not happy with it, but one-person-one-vote would be an unmitigated disaster.

While I have conceded to your "people are dumb" argument on this subject that still doesn't not change that the current system is not to blame for a lot of the "dumb" complacency because of never actually having to take responsibility for being "dumb" and having to think your yourself mixed with a fabricated sense of independency because the system is based on controlling through the guise of "independency", "freedom" and "self reliance". I would agree with your ideal if we were not a two party system, but we are, and until we expand to a blue print that actually represents the diversity and size of our county where there are true checks and balances we are going to be going down this downward spiral that we are firmly set upon. From what I can see something should have been done about this after the civil war because that was really the historic point where the whole mess fell apart because of the deals made during the formation of our government to get everyone on board.. mixed with that the system worked fine for a smaller population. Also the "people are dumb" angle only works if people are in fact uneducated, look at how what is taught in most schools has changed even in the last 50 years, just the act of replacing civics with social studies says a lot about the trend of dumbing down of our population [when I took Poly-sci in collage I was truly shocked by the level of ignorance of 90% of my class that came out of our conventional high schools, no one new anything about world affairs, how war and economics works or even what ww2 was about  ] which is controlled by our government. This would not be a problem if people weren't "dumb" but not being "dumb" kind'a goes against most forms of civilizationment [governments, religion, the PTA etcetera] because almost all forms are based on "people are dumb sheep", but, how you you propose we brake the chain? How do you propose we evolve if we just stay the course?

That is the issue with this country. We are not two party people, yet we are forced to vote that way because let's face it, a third party will never fucking win.

I've brought this up here I believe before, but I'll say it again. Donald Trump is the best fucking thing to happen to politics in decades and it has NOTHING to do with him being a good candidate. The reason I say this is he has disrupted the system so much that it could force them to disestablish and create a more moderate party, which I believe is where the majority of people are. Most people I talk too seem in the moderate viewpoint. There are many folks, at least that I've met in person, that are not extreme to the right or the left.

Most of us want basically the same things, but we get torn apart by one issue or another instead of unifying.

I also don't believe in the "people are dumb" policy some have here. Everyone is different in what they believe and that doesn't make them dumb, it makes them unique. What is dumb is to not try to convince someone intelligently and just bombard them with banter or rude comments. There's a right and a wrong way to sway someone, and being a dick is not the right way. I know because I try it myself and it doesn't work! LOL!

I hope that of all the candidates, Bernie gets it, but I still fear for us under him. I believe this election is shit regardless but perhaps the disruption of the system could bring in a good candidate for the next one. Well unless we all die or something. :)

I am a uniquely bad painter. My paintings should not be hung in the same room as someone who has the ability to paint well beyond an illustration of what a bad painting looks like.

extend the analogy accordingly.

Belief without questioning is what got us into the mess we are in, globally

It occurred to me almost as soon as I wrote that that my poor carpentry skills would have been an analogy.
