recently read Bob Mould's memoir - aside from learning that the zen arcade session was fueled in part by crystal meth-laced coffee grounds, I found out that John Cale once showed up backstage really early on (like metal circus era) and offered to produce them, but they were put off by how drunk he was and declined...
