Get a good fuzz.
Pretty much any of the ones suggested or some thing by Fuzzhugger, Ghost, Mellowtone etc.
BTW play around with different batteries or a starve in the case of Fuzzhuggers.
You’d be surprised how a used battery can add compression, smoth or frizz up the fuzz and even darken the tone.

Algal Bloom RULES THE BASS for the reason of starve. It lets the bass be so growly and bass-ful.
Sorry for band spam but I have the Algal Bloom on the bass and guitar on this track I just posted and it sounds huge.

Some of the dirt settings approach acceptable on the M series, but you're really much better off with dedicated pedals for that.Joe Gress wrote:As much as I dislike multi pedals myslef, I'd suggest getting one for the first pedal to see what kinds of effects you like the sound of. The M series is a great one from what I have heard.

Re: First pedal for Bass
Apart from a tuner, I would recommend a Fairfield Circuitry Accountant compressor as a first pedal. It clips if you crank it--I'm not sure if it's supposed to be a dirt pedal but it will, if you set it on PAD-2 & crank the gain.
The ZOOM series multi pedals are affordable & fun, but like the_carl said, they're not great for dirt. Preamp/head simulators, comps, colors, delays, reverbs--yes they're great for all of those but for whatever reason they don't do dirt very well. You may disagree; see for yourself.
I think it depends on the application but for straight-forward clean, dark bass, comp is fundamental for me. For the more adventurous, an octave down or bottom & mids-heavy distortion or fuzz will push you through the fog.

If someone could really school me on "x fuzz gives x sound" in general terms..that'd be great
