Really want an Acidbox II + a good simple drum machine. The Akai MPC 1000 was such an epic failure for me, I need to find something that does simple stuff. Maybe a TR-8? I want to be able to run it into the Acidbox though.

Strange Tales, what are you looking for out of a drum machine? I happen to have played with a few and love talking drum machines. I know you fuck with eurorack and I have heard some decently good thimlngs about the Tanzbär provided you can actually find one, and I really enjoy my Vermona, though MFB has a good rep for drum machines and the new ones look great too. Alternatively the first two gens of electribes are very useful, esp. the ESX and the ER-1 in my experience. People have good things to say about the volca sample though limited numbers of patterns is a thing, unless you are playing the patterns. The again there are about a million weird old 90s digital things or 80s bizarro things. 606s, 707s, korg ddd series, roland r8, yamaha rx and oh god, I will stop.
What are you looking for?
The Roland TR-8 has a lot of great features and a lot of bizarre limitations, some of which have been slightly remedied by the MX-1. I hear mostly great things, bit if one those limitations is not solved by the mx-1 or you don't want the aira peripherals, it might be a bad choice aggghh I will stop again.

I mean, I'm not looking for much outside of a snare, bass drum, high hat, and ride cymbal for the basics. If I was going for luxury stuff I'd ask for a crash, some toms, and a dub style delay on there as well (like RE-20 inspired). Outside of that I'd rather just have a small sampler to put pieces together and make a beat out of that. The Akai was way too much for my dumb brain to handle though. Knowing me, I might just shoot way over the god damn moon though looking for one

Thank you for the recommendations though! I'll look into all of those tomorrow. I've had the Electribes recommended to me before, but I can't tell which one is from which gen.

I hated the MPC1000 too, ST (as you well know for very similar reasons).
You ever thought of a Yamaha SU-700 sampler? Much simpler interface (I haven't gotten deep into mine yet but they are fairly cheap these days)...Yea, floppy disks, but it doesn't take long to load....I actually really like the interface but havent gotten too much into sequencing..but it might be another option.
So far though, the best luck I have had with a drum machine is the HR-16...I don't like the SR-16 as much (nor things like the Kawai Rsss).
Another thing that I like is the Amdek/Roland CMU-800...once you figure out the notes on midi channel 10, it is a TR 606 kinda-like. Plus it converts midi to CV/Gate on all channels and has separate out for all it's tone generators. You'd have to get a little conversion box from someone though...but the whole setup runs pretty cheap. If you are running loopers, you might be able to get away with something like the Yamaha FB-01 synth and just loop the drum sounds (or do this:

Re: Sunday GAS Party (secret santees.....be stalked here)
the first gen electribes are the EA-1, ER-1, ES-1, and EM-1. There are mk1 and mk2 of at least the first three, not sure on the EM. The mk 1s are plastic and metal, but feel pretty sturdy. The mk2s are all metal to my knowledge. The ES-1 is a decent sampler with built in effects, motion sequencing, and a delay that can be synced to the tempo.
The second gens are the ESX and EMX. the have crappy tubes in them, though you can put nicer tubes in, or bypass them. I have used the ESX a bunch though never owned one. It also samples, and has slightly more "modern" features or whatever. Everyone I know who owns one loves it, and while I wouldn't call them a breeze to use, I would say the electrbes are not complicated and the built in effects would probably suit your needs.
Alternatively, any old machine with individual outs (I believe a lot of the yamaha rx and roland machines fit this) and a good delay pedal/outboard effects. I use a combination of the ES-1, ER-1, and Vermona DRM-1, depending, and that is... more than enough, tbh.

Strange Tales, get the Rhythm Imposer MK3. It's a highly modded HR-16 with circuit bend switches, loads of update-able stereo effects like bitcrushing, and hot swappable sound banks.

Re: Sunday GAS Party (secret santees.....be stalked here)
Rhythm Imposer is expensive sometimes on eBay. Better off just getting an HR-16 and swapping the roms with the sounds you want.
But anyway, my friend texted me two nights ago about trading their brand new (still has all the stuff and has been sitting in a box) HR-16B...still gotta fix my HR-16 (friend broke the sliders off).
ST, just try to get that Mutable thing's drums working...might be the best bet man.

This. When did they go up in price so much? I should have bought the one I saw at an estate sale 5 years ago.
