Volca, Pocket Piano, Pocket Operator Virgin

Post by weebles »

So I want to get a simple synth noise maker to dick around with and make loops.

Having no experience whatsoever with any of it, I've been looking at the Korg Volcas, Critter & Guitari Pocket Piano, and the Teenage Engineering Pocket Operators. Pocket operators are $59, so that looks like a good deal for me, but the Pocket Pianos and Volcas just seems so fun.

Any suggestions for an entry-level synth-ish thing?

I'd suggest the Volca Bass. You get a sequencer, plus 3 VCOs that are seperate so you can get a loop going with 3 voices.

I don't know much about the Pocket Piano, but I've got The Volca Keys and Beats and a PO Rhythm. The Volca's going to be a few bucks more and there's plenty used ones floating around. It's got a better build quality than the POs, meaning it's got a case. The advantage the POs have is they've got a song mode for linking up patterns.

I felt I could do most of the Volca Bass things on my Keys, plus a ton more. But either way I ended up with a Pocket Piano instead. Easier to play, easier to make sound good. I'm a pleb. Sue me.

For entry level stuff I'd feel like either one of the volcas is a really good deal. Personally I'd like something with a sequencer.

If you don't mind the size, plus a little extra learning, the older used korg electribe type grooveboxes can probably do way more stuff than the other ones. Bandmate picked one up for like 100€

EDIT: because of all the pocket piano suggestions I now checked it out. Looks like a ton of fun god damnit and now I want one
