Honestly, I love the shit out of black metal, I would marry doom metal and have its babies, but death metal never did it for me.

Probably because ostentatious technical skill is literally the last thing that I find compelling in most music.

hardly describes the majority of DM bands, and is therefore a poor excuse to write off the entire genre.

I think what I was driving at was more finding ways to make a band sound like them at their best or create a sonic atmosphere upon which to stage the material, as opposed to just recording a band and making it sound like they've been recorded in a nice environment with some people who know how to do that, but only that.
If that makes sense.

i'll give you unpopular opinion;

high on fire's worst album is "surrounded by thieves", and i blame the sound. "art of self defense" sounds 1000x times better, and the songs are better too.
