Finally...here's some stuff I've been working on. The first thing I've recorded, mixed and mastered myself. I can't figure out how to embed it or link it through the bandcamp button here but the link is below in my signature. Anyone know how to embed or do the bandcamp bbcode thing? The heavy part starts about 10 minutes...it's a slow build.

Thanks a lot. Turns out I didn't have adobe installed, it's a new computer and I don't really go online with it.

Very nice. Just downloaded this before taking my dog for a walk. I really dig what you do. That second song was really awesome.

In other drone news...I've been messing around with mics and recording and I came up with something I really like for heavy Earth/Sunn style fuzz/drones. I'm using a Sunn Concert Lead into a 2x15BH with a Sennheiser MD421 up close but the magic is when I add a Rode NT1a (my only condenser) about 6' back in line (but the speakers are tilted down a bit so they're off axis) and blending the two together is just huge and spacious. The Rode gets the room ambience and it also sounds good when I'm going clean with lots of reverb and delay. I highly recommend it. It sounds much bigger than when I tried close mic'ing two amps.

Just spent a very enjoyable 20 minutes with the first track over coffee. Nice job.

Thanks a lot. I put a second song up last week or so. I'm trying to learn how to do something new on each recording so it's a bit of creative output and learning experience as I get deeper into home recording.
I really like both of those quotes in your signature.

Anything you guys do to either prevent yourself or to go back and edit things down to keep them from getting too busy with drone? Especially since I've been recording lately and getting comfortable with adding software synths for textures both subtle and and the forefront I find my current stuff getting more and more dense and it's losing some of the appeal but I haven't found the sweet spot of minimalism and positive additions.

Yeah, I have a really hard time with this, actually. Think I got a nice balance here:
[soundcloud]https://soundcloud.com/escapecraft/hydrocarbon-seeps-wip[/soundcloud]

But it's always hard to tell with this sort of stuff whether or not it's going to resonate with other people. Like I really enjoy this track:
https://escapecraft.bandcamp.com/track/known-in-fire
However with some removal it feels just a little too sparse despite the drone itself being fairly thick since all the moving parts (as it were) are pretty buried for the first 5 minutes or so.

TBH I think the only real answer is to fail forward.

How much planning do you put into your recordings? Sometimes I'll just noodle on guitar till I find something I like and then improvise from there, sometimes I have a sort of mood I'm looking to do and then improvise from there. I've had plans on doing some layered stuff and really mapping it all out before I record but I never get around to it. When it comes to my band stuff I've always been pretty planned out but with drone I like to improvise a track or two then go back and add a few more over the top often without even listening to the other tracks I've recorded and just letting them sit next to each other...if it doesn't work then I'll delete the one I like the least.

Pretty much the same as you :idk: everything I do is what ever it is, some stuff I work out some stuff just happens :idk:

Usually I have a place or phenomenon in mind, but in practice it's mostly just adding things together to see if they create an accurate representation of the imagined vista.

For drone I tend to hit a setting I like on my synth/pedals and just start recording from there. I just kind of add or subtract stuff from there and edit out the parts I don't like.
