I hadn't read either of these interviews, and they're fantastic! Thanks for these.
You hear many records where you're like, "Fuck, that sounds analog," and you get told, "No, it's all Pro Tools, man."
I actually made this mistake recently! I was talking online with Kevin McMahon who mixes Titus Andronicus and the recent Swans records. I told him how much I liked the raw, analog sound of the new Titus Andronicus record. He told me it's not analogue at all! All Pro Tools, although he did do it in a way that it was intended to sound analogue. All their records are apparently Pro Tools. If you listen to The Airing of Grievances, it's pretty incredible to know that!
One of the goals was to make something so melancholic that it would become the ultimate wrist-slashing experience
Unfortch for Mr. Broadrick this distinction goes to The Weakerthans' "Virtute The Cat Explains Her Departure." Actually, I always found Jesu sort of... oddly... uplifting? Like church music. Surely he is aware of the fact that Jesu sounds like church music. He called it "Jesu," for fuck's sake.

Broadrick is my inspiration for growing old and being a dad but still playing heavy shit.
Pleased to note I am not alone in seeking this inspiration. My biggest inspirations are Alan Rickman (who didn't start acting until he was 49) and James Murphy (who didn't found LCD Soundsystem until he was 31). 29 is old in punk years. All my favourite bands made their best music in their early- to mid-'20s. It's a lot of pressure... I have a kid and the possibility of ever touring is looking bleaker as time goes on.

This was my point in telling the story! I sounded very much like a noob.

I recalled, at the time, the line in Say Anything's "Admit It!!!"
"Go analog, baby, you're so postmodern"
You're diving faceforward into an antiquated past
I was all gung-ho about the analog sound and it wasn't at all. Lesson learned for saving money if offered analog in future recording sessions. For example, at Hotel2Tango, tape adds, like, $400 some dollars to your session. Gonna pass on that option. If I ever go.

Right, the second quote is just a better illustration of the point: Avoiding digital is very much the tone lawyer marketing at work. Not that they aren't two different things (Pro Tools and tape), but most people don't know what the differences are beyond HURR DURR MOJO TOANZ

Exactly. I didn't think it was MOJO TONEZ so much as VINTAGE PUNK TONEZ. In either case, I am now aware that it's marketing, to a large extent.

Fuck, I hate it when this happens.

Although it's awesome when you choose an album based on the cover and it ends up slaying.

That's how I found SubRosa, TBH. The fallen angel cover.

EDIT: Actually, I accidentally lied. SubRosa opened for Boris but I didn't make it in time for their set. That is how I found Brand New, though. The Deja cover with the astronaut. Very iiiiiiiiiinteresting.
