I don't feel like reading the other posts but I disagree with the original post. Especially the first Mark quotation.
The output of your pickups greatly effects a pedal like the Soda Meiser on if you're going to have a big muff-like fuzz or scrambled compressed fuzz.
The tone control, or what frequencies a certain guitar puts out effects pedals like the Aenima or Torn's Peaker.
Now yes this isn't noticeable to the average joe shmoe. However it depends on the context. I've had people come up to me after a concert complimenting the crazy sounds I can get, and how big my guitar sounds when its just me with no bassist.
Being in a guitar and drums band has shown me how your guitar sounds does effect people. My main goal is to sound as big and powerful as possible even when I play clean. There is no way I could pull off a great sounding gig with a squier affinity strat, boss ds-1 into a line six solid state modeling amp. It wouldn't be true to what the song was supposed to sound like.
Now that I've explained myself...
Fuck anyone who says something like a guitar doesn't change anything. Whether its noticed or not, if you care or not, it still changes things. People who disagree don't have a feel for what their electronic instrument is doing, they're only concerned with the musical part. Which is valid, because music is very important, but there's more to it than just notes and chords. To those of us who use the crazy fuzz, echoes, and modulation like we do, everything matters in our rig. It does make a difference

I spent a lot of yesterday evening drinking beer and talking music with a hip hop artist who had moved here from Philly.
He now plays rhythm guitar for Echo Boom.

We were both amused when we discovered we have the same musical inspirations.
We talk old rock, hip hop, GoGo and artists we mutually admire and love.
And he’s a big fan of Kurosawa movies so we also talked about his adaptations of Shakespeare and how “The Hidden Fortress” inspired “Star Wars”.
My daughter plied us with beer so we had a great time.
Sadly he has no fuzz and the lead only has a Muff. I shall endeavor to change this situation (evil laughter and organ music fills the room).

Oh and I got hugged by hot dancing girls too.
