That's awesome dase. I'm largely self taught as well. I did actually take just general art classes in college and that is what really made me just stop cause my teacher was awful and I just didn't bother. I started up painting around 27 and I'll be 33 in a couple of weeks now. A large reason why i started doing it so far more was I got to show my work at two outdoor art/craft shows that happen here locally and that's where I end up selling most of my stuff nowadays. I started just now doing the facebook thing and that's started to generate much more commission work like I had back in the day.
And don't feel so bad gunslinger, I'm really in that same boat as well. All I pretty much do is just post up my work on google plus and facebook and then update my website semi-regularly. but once I do the first single post that's pretty much it. I don't keep reposting or resharing. Same with my music whenever I release a new album or whatever. It's usually oh here this is and that's about all I bother doing. :/
My commissions have largely funded my collection of gear. Which is why I hardly ever get rid of anything as in trying to trade up to get something else. I'm just able to purchase it outright and not have to sacrifice something else I wanted.
